That's cool. I wondered about it too. It must have been easier to buy real dog biscuits than to make cookies like them or whatever. And I wonder if this show gave Mel Gibson the idea in LETHAL WEAPON.

For a man who is in pretty good shape at 77, aside from some old injury induced arthritis, one does wonder about his diet. We've got him eating dog bisquits and cheap wine in TGAH. In his wonderful movie "The Almost Guys", when you listen to the commentary by the writer/director folks, we learn that in one scene when Culp is given a poorly cooked hotdog on an old, moldy bun, he eats it without a pause. The scene needed to be repeated and once again, Culp, without a thought, ate the whole undercooked, moldy thing. We all see Culp eat the hotdog in "200 mph" episode, as well, which was lying on the ground.
Apparently, we can assume that Robert Martin Culp has the #1 cast iron stomach in Hollywood! ;-)))

Just remembering stuff I saw in my health and safety class when I was going to be a waitress (which I didn't start as I got my current one), some of the stuff there that they showed was just... yuck. It's dangerous and risky to eat any of that food, as some are allergic to mold (or penicillin as it's made from the stuff). However, unless cooked, cooled to room temperature in the room and recooked, hotdogs are usually pre-cooked, so they're for the most part safe regardless, (just taste bad undercooked.) They should never have given that to Culp, regardless of the fact he did eat it. But... on "200MPH fastball" Culp, probably ate half of it before he took a bite. I seriously doubt he ate the actual hotdog the other guy took a bite out of and dropped on the ground there. Theater can be cheap and tricks can be made (see note below for example), but this is one I don't think they'd do out of risk of making Culp ill and missing work - even if he has a cast iron stomach. *In this case, we had to show there was pink champagne in the glasses, but we couldn't have liquid on stage and being a high school musical, none could legally drink regardless. So, they used a clear pink liquid gel and put marbles in it to show it was sparkly champagne when the light hit them. Worked very well - so long as no one pretended to toss back the drink.

I can believe it. After all, in MY HEROES HAVE ALWAYS BEEN COWBOYS, you hear Bill tell Winslow that he has a strong stomach. I am like that too. I can eat most things unless I am allergic to them.

Still... it's a big risk, and while Bill might have a strong stomach, Culp was lucky he didn't get sick. I have had to do this before as well in other things. It's just a big gamble, and while you're lucky sometimes others, no...

For all we know, maybe he had some Exlax and such after to help cleanse him out. Plus, I am sure there was a doctor on set just in case.

there would have to be a dr. of course if you watch he always just takes little bites of them. Then we just see Bill chewing and you don't actually see him eat the whole box. just one or two. or maybe bites of the same one and we assume he is on his 3rd or fifth or even 20th dog biscuite.
I have seen serveral shows taped. and they do that alot. I saw hunter once and I think they must have had Hunter and Mccall walking up the same walk way 50 times. Also in that scene there was a guy picking up trash and each time he had to spread out the trash again and again. it was funny.

Melmac, I know this may be a stretch for you, but you might wish to try to have SOME sense of humor about Culp in "The Almost Guys". It was supposed to be a FUNNY anecdote. After all, that movie was 3 years ago and so far, Culp is still alive and kicking. As a physician, a little mold doesn't taste good, but overall isn't killing folks right and left. Just think, as well, how many cups of coffee Culp apparently drank in TGAH--Maxwell certainly should have had an ulcer or two! And, I stand by my iron stomach designation for Culp, too. Mona

Mona Actually, I have a lighter side, unfortunately even there you do not get my humor (then again, no one does). I can have an opinion, and I respect Culp for having an iron stomach - though he probably didn't have to eat the whole thing. In fact, most don't in shows like this. Ex. you don't eat the whole doughnut per take, and I doubt he should've done that for the hot dogs as well. That said, I'm also taken literally too here. Just to clarify, I wasn't bashing Culp, in fact, I was upset the producers would even risk his health doing that stuff - even for a comedy. It's a gamble (no matter how small) each time someone tries that, even with "a little mold" as you say. Example, I've been given bad food poisoning in real life because of something like this in theater, so I do at least know where I'm coming from on the negative side. I wound up performing sick and nearly passing out on stage from it as the play progressed. That said, I'm honestly amazed and impressed that Culp did have a strong stomach to eat a moldy hot dog twice with no ill effects.

Uh, isn't penicillin a mold?
I think Culp was just taking his medications.

I think Culp was just taking his medications. Yes, but people are allergic to it, and you can get sick from it even without allergies - mold in general, but that's not my point. I am concerned - even now because it could happen again - because it's careless regardless. You can also design food a lot like costumes and create realistic looking mold and such from stuff that isn't harmful if consumed. Meaning, a perfectly and safer edibile concoction that looks horrible to eat to the audience. They do stuff like that for horror movies too. I do like Culp enough to say "Hey, that's a dumb idea to do that to him, giving him an undercooked hotdog and moldy hotdog bun" to the producers. But I digress... back to Bill eating his wonderful dog biscuits. As far as dog biscuits, I've had a few in my time and while they taste bad, they don't usually bother you if consumed. Cat food, on the other hand... I don't know why they like the food. :-\ (I also admit I did this when I was little and haven't since. )

Hey, I've eaten Milkbones and they taste just fine. I kind of liked them. If I was hungry and they were around I'd eat them again, no problem. No upset stomach at all! Bill did have some discrimination; we didn't see him eat Pam's cat's canned food. THAT'S really bad stuff! Trust me! Mona
