Has everyone heard the great news? "Stingray" is due out on DVD by the end of this year (released by VEI in Canada). This is great news because VEI handled the Canadian release of Cannell's "Hardcastle & McCormick" and all the original music remains intact on that one; the original music is crucial to "Stingray". For those of you who have never seen it, I could go on at length, but let me just tell you that "Stingray" is classic mid-eighties Cannell. It was Cannell's response to the same MTV Cops memo that famously inspired "Miami Vice" earlier that same season. Like "GAH" it featured an original song by Post and Geyer in every episode (usually sung by a different artist every week, though Joey Scarburry did show up for one episode), and it's premise was succinctly (and I suppose, quite accurately) summed up by my father one night, toward the end of the first season, about halfway through an episode, when he looked right at me and said, "So, basically, this guy's a one-man A-Team." I think the old man hit the nail right on the head with that observation. www.tvsquad.com/2007/04/14/at-last-stingray-coming-to-dvd-in-december/

I have never seen it, but if I want a one-man A-TEAM, I have all seven seasons of MACGYVER. Thanks for the update, J-Man. I will have to check it out.

And, speaking of elusiveness... we've just spotted the rare HD... that is the HoudiniDerek. I don't know if I'd get "Stingray," but it does sound like an interesting premise. Now, if they'd make a DVD set to "Top of the Hill..."

If you'll all indulge me in a few random quotes from the original commercials back in the day. ANNOUNCER: "Stingray, the one man you can turn to when the odds are against you." RAY: "I will come to you...I will ask you for a favor...you must do it." ANNOUNCER: "When you can't call the cops, call Stingray." ANNOUNCER: "Be there."

I want "Stingray" on DVD. I am a big fan of Nick Mancuso. Also, a big fan of Robert Vaughn, who was in one episode. Of course, SJC hired Vaughn for the ATeam in the last season.
So, when is the official release date?

Worse than GAH? Unlikely...as long as SJC didn't put it out.

It's getting so close, I can hardly wait. For those too young to remember or those who missed it the first time around, let me just assure you that, in 1986, it got no cooler than this:

BTW, although the pilot episode has a fair amount of licensed music, the rest of the series has extremely, extremely little. One notable exception in the second season episode "Less Than the Eye Can See", which has a different version of When You Wish Upon a Star playing in the background of many scenes (children's record at a family's house, Muzak at a shopping mall, etc). Not a major plot point, and if they were going for some kind of symbolism it went right over my teenage head and I haven't bothered to watch it with and analytical, adult eye in recent years (I probably should).
My point being, if we do lose the licensed music (and I hope we don't) it won't affect Stingray as much as it affected GAH because, outside of the pilot (which had a fair amount) there really wasn't that much in the series overall.
On a more positive note, I'm looking forward to getting the DVDs so that I can finally hear the show in stereo. Although I still have every episode on tape from it's original network run, it was, like that overlay thingamajig said, "in stereo where available"; and that was definitely not The J-Man's parents' house. The final season of The A-Team was also the only season to be produced and broadcast in stereo, and it was such a delight a year or two ago when the DVDs came out to finally hear the theme song in stereo. Stingray, being a show in which the music (and sound in general) was so important, I suspect our ears may be in for a real treat. Remember, Cannell created, produced, and wrote this show in response to the same famous two-word memo from Brandon Tartikoff that gave birth to Miami Vice: "MTV Cops".
