Yeah, if I had Ralph's shrinking power, I may have climbed inside of it! As it was, I thought my chances were 50:50 of dying of heatstroke during the night, so I moved to a hotel, which is 0.5 miles from my house. Slight waste of money, perhaps, but it was too late, I felt to call a friend and crash at their home.

Thanks, HD! I appreciate it! I've got absolutely nothing special planned for today, since I have to work, but it's nice to walk around realizing one was born on this day some time ago. Mona

Happy Birthday!! Enjoy it with a favorite fed..... I imagine Carlisle is too business-focused to take the day off just to help Mona celebrate.

Carlisle is to Mona what dog poop was to Felix Unger--disgusting and horrifying! Metaphorically, Mona

Oh, goodness, no. I'm much more Oscar Madison! My beloved grandmother was Felix Unger's tidiness role model in life, however.

Hello, all,
Since I can't find my other "About Me" thread, I'm back to using this one.
I have been touched by private and public messages to me asking about my health. That is enough to get to me write again on this Forum. Thank you to all concerned about me. That's truly very kind.
I had six hour brain surgery 7/21/09, where they removed FOUR benign brain tumors. It was hard for me to get out of the anesthesia, but a homeopathic remedy got me awake again. (Remember, as a physician I specialize in alternative medicine). Still I had a tube in my head draining bloody fluid (uh, yuck!), and a central line in my neck (avoid these; very uncomfortable), a catheter up my bladder--all the ICU fun a person can have. They only shaved my incision, which winds from my left ear up and around to the middle hairline by my forehead. I was pleasantly surprised, expecting to have been much more shaved.
I was expected to be in the hospital for 4-5 days, but got out in 2.5, which is why doctors DO like operating on people who are healthy and in shape. But, my face was swollen, I was anemic, and it was a good solid month before I felt back to normal. I did not work during that month which was very beneficial. I have an incredibly supportive med school where I am faculty. It's nice needing time off and not at risk of losing one's job! I began full-time work after one month, but that week I had to go to bed by 9 p.m. at the latest, due to exhaustion.
Now, at 7-8 weeks post-surgery, my incision scar is still swollen like a "Klingon ridge" but it's going down. It could take up to six months for the ridge to settle down into a normal scar. My head is still sore. It's only been two weeks since I could lie down at night on just one pillow; otherwise, head swelling would occur and so I needed two pillows before that (I slept sitting up for the first month; you get used to it). My biggest problem is left jaw pain. They sliced through the eating/chewing muscle (temporalis and pterygion), and so my jaw cannot open without being painful/stiff/sore. It's less painful than at first, when eating a slice of cucumber was the width my mouth could open, but it's still painful. I have hope but am frustrated with it. I see my neurosurgeon again on Monday and will ask him what's the prognosis for that and its complete healing.
I am back to exercising normally now. Treating the iron anemia helped that a lot, plus giving my stamina some time to recover. You'd never know they were staring at my brain two months ago looking at me.
The axiom of the story is: DO NOT develop brain tumors! ;-)))
Again, thank you all for your concern. I REALLY appreciate it. Now, I shall go back to lurking!
Mona

You've been in my thoughts Mona since you had the surgery. I'm glad to hear despite some drawbacks that the recovery seems to be going well. I'm also glad, again, that the tumors were benign!
