As far as I'm aware Post was not involved in any of the new music heard on the DVD sets. I've talked to Stephen Geyer several times and I know he wasn't involved at all. So it was Joey Scarbury all by himself who wrote AND sang the new songs, then? No, prometheus - Scarbury covered the songs and most of the ones are still there - the ones written by Geyer. The replacements that were used on the DVDs were sung by relative newbies or pop bands. And I don't think Scarbury's voice would pass off for a girl's in the songs that were replaced for Rhonda. They're higher pitched, even higher than Scarbury's voice can get. So - here's the lowdown: The original songs that are still on GAH were written by Stephen Geyer. The songs on the show at it Originally ran were sung by Scarbury. The exceptions were the few sung by Faye Grant as Rhonda when LA Freeway (the kids' band) was performing. On the DVDs, the songs that were covered by Scarbury (meaning not originally written by Geyer, i.e. Rocket Man) were replaced in order to avoid the royalty payments. The only cover still on any of the episodes in the DVD collection is "Greatest Love of All" sung by Whitney Houston on "GAHeroine." Why we haven't figured out. >>>>>>>>>>>>>> BTW, Greenguy - thanks for reminding me about the car in "Shock Will Kill You." I can barely hear it on my TV of the horn as it blares while they're driving, but it's just barely there. Sad thing is though, now I know I'm tired. I'm remembering this stuff but am having trouble trying to figure out what I want to make out of clay for projects.

As far as I can tell none of the original team was involved with the replacement music.

OK, thanks guys. I think I understand better now. So "Rocket Man" was never sung by Elton John on TGAH, but was covered by Scarbury. And so were all the other songs written by famous singers. Before now, I always thought that perhaps, originally (when the show first aired), the songs heard on the show were actually the originals-----those that are still played on "soft rock" stations today.

You have it right - the only exception was "The Greatest Love of All," sung by Whitney Houston on "The Greatest American Heroine" pilot. But since many of us see that pilot as a bad dream (though it was really just a bad attempt), I would say you're 100 percent right.

They usually had to have cover versions on the show, but in a dream, they could actually have the real version! Lol (No offence to the covers btw, I actually liked them, lol).

Yeah, I liked the ones I've listened too for the show - they were all perfect. I am glad though that they did fix "Operation Spoilsport's" song though. While again, I agree with HD that the song wasn't too bad - it did mention "The end of the world" which fit the theme, Ralph says "Eve of Destruction," which is from the '70s and the vocals are present day. (As far as "GAHeroine," the irony is the song they chose originally and kept DID NOT fit the montage to begin with IMHO. I mean... yes, the song features teaching children, and Holly is a teacher... BUT Ralph and Bill are trying to find a suit wearer. Ralph is NOT trying to literally fall in love with Holly, and the part they chose for the scene does not feature the lyrics on teaching children. )

For most of those replacement songs, I honestly don't even remember most of them afterward for some reason, heh. Whereas I always remember the songs sung by Scarbury, they just make a bigger impression for me.

Does anyone know, when they show those GAH episodes on the Syfy channel this week, are they going to be using those replacement songs?

I didn't even know that they were going to air the episodes on SyFy. That's great! (unfortunately, we don't get SyFy up here. Canada has its own sci-fi channel called "Space: The Imagination Station".)

According to Greenguy, and what I personally saw last year on the SyFy channel, they will be the replaced songs EXCEPT for "Eve of Destruction" in the episode "Operation: Spoilsport." That has since been corrected, and leaves me to wonder if SJC had initially planned on it remaining (since it was used on "A-Team" DVD), but something happened and the initial replacement just got used instead. Then again - with SJC's passing, that doesn't mean the originals could be returned and air on the show.

Even if I already have the episodes, it feels so great to know they're actually getting some attention and staying in the public eye. Just goes to demonstrate that there's no such thing as an old show. Well we'll see about the songs, that should be interesting to note here either way.

I also watched a lot of SHOWCASE ACTION plus DEJA VIEW which at that time were showing American series UNCUT such as The A-Team and The Incredible Hulk. Many late nights would find me watching the DRIVE-IN CLASSICS channel too.

Yep...I'd say for sure they will be the altered versions except for Spoilsport that will have EVE reinserted as Mel said. Of course they will be butchered with cuts, and sped up to fit in more commercial time.

Yes, most of those Canadian channels you mentioned are the equivalent of various American specialty channels. For example, "Deja View" would be the equivalent of your "Retro Channel" and "Showcase" is the rough Canadian equivalent of "HBO"(----which we also get up here on cable).

Just goes to demonstrate that there's no such thing as an old show. Absolutely! It's especially great, when we consider that many people do discover the series this way, and many of these will become fans. It's awesome, of course, that TGAH is available on DVD, but most people who don't know the show wouldn't make the leap of faith and buy the DVDs without knowing what they're buying. The real way to make new fans-----particularly from the newer generations----is for the show to air on TV. So this is wonderful indeed!

[Of course they will be butchered with cuts, and sped up to fit in more commercial time. Yeah that might be, though even those can be interesting. I have the DVD for Jim Henson's Emmett Otter's Jugband Christmas, and one of the special features sort of compares the differences between the complete special and the altered versions that appeared on TV over the years. Sorry, like I said, I've volunteered at a TV museum; I think about these things a lot, lol. Huh, that's interesting, well now I've learned something new about Canadian Television! ; D Exactly, classic TV shows need exposure, otherwise they just end up being hidden away on DVDs. I've actually been dwelling on that for awhile so I was very surprised (and happy) to hear about this! : D

Was going to mention - I do know of ONE cut they tend to do on the current broadcasts of the series - In "Divorce, Venusian Style," they tend to cut out the first playing of "Opposites" when Ralph is walking the street after the argument with Bill. It is a fairly seamless cut though because he walks out for a bit, Bill sees the baddies, and yells for Ralph. The teacher then turns around, goes to the dumpster and the second playing of "Opposites" here does appear.
I think Maxwell-FBI noticed a few more cuts than that and on other eps, but this is the only one I distinctly remember.

Out of all the music changes, I think Rocket Man might be the worst change...although I was always partial to the songs in HOG WILD and DON'T MESS AROUND WITH JIM.

Out of all the music changes, I think Rocket Man might be the worst change...although I was always partial to the songs in HOG WILD and DON'T MESS AROUND WITH JIM. To me the two worst replacements were the ones for the Pilot (both) and the conclusion of "Operation: Spoilsport" (for implying the greenguys literally love Ralph and Bill). And I do not like the fact they cut down and replaced songs that Rhonda covered in "Classical Gas" because it took out four minutes of the show. Most I was a bit indifferent to, and they replacement for "Eve of Destruction" and "My Heroes have always been cowboys" were not too bad because they at least fit the action going on. That said on "Eve" they really should've paid the money for the song. It's the ONLY song directly referenced by name used in the series. (Does make me wonder where they got the copyright allowance for "Superfriends" though). The one replacement I thought was actually better was the instrumental for Wizards and Warlocks, which replaced "Pinball Wizard." I think it's just the fact it sounds a bit more arcade and fitting of the video game he's playing (though IRL "Dungeons and Dragons" didn't have background music or frankly good sound effects) made it better IMHO.
