Now, let me explain what I am: I am obsessed by VIDEO preservation of the movies/series I like the most. If the picture quality of the DVD edition sucks, to me that product is "lost" forever, not preserved for the many centuries to come. Said that: 1- Is the picture quality of the TGAH DVD edition great if not excellent?2- No dirt, grain, speckles or spots? I only know debris is present on re-used footage or something along those lines...  3- Has the series been remastered/restored, somehow? MANY THANKS!  |

I would say yes it was, though it could be the Japanese version releases (meaning, both the same - including English, only the Japanese ones have all the original music). Now, "GAHeroine." I would say they took time to do some clean up on things; however, because it was a test pilot some of the lighting is very hot in places and doesn't have the same feel to it as the original series. It looks what it is - a test pilot that was never to air in the first place, kinda like bloopers. |

Of course, the YouTube system tends to lower the video quality of the excerpts a lot... So are they taken from Anchor Bay release? Video quality is good, but not amazing... AGAIN, it's YouTube!  |

It probably is. Sometimes the quality is the best you're gonna get. Like for instance the Incredible Hulk DVDs. Some folks say it's the same quality that you see when they air the show on Sci-Fi Channel at times. With the Youtube thing aside, I'd say it's ONE of the DVD releases. I can't really tell which one, looks like the same quality Anchor Bay had. Though we can't be sure because the song "Don't let me down" stayed in the Anchor Bay version. If this was another clip that had the replaced songs in it, then we could be more sure. Personally, I think the Anchor Bay version is good, just wish the music hadn't been replaced.

Anyway, the "film" used for shooting was cheap --- all the TV series were cheap at the time.

The DVDs look very good, only certain sequences where they use stock footage (some of the flying sequences for instance) are a little bit grainy, but nothing major.  Overall the picture quality is quite satisfactory. |

True, but overall it's not too bad, and given how the quality is on DVD makes it better. But, I will also give it one more boost - at least ABC didn't decide to wipe the videos to "GAH" and other shows they made like they did to "Doctor Who." In that case, a bunch of the First Doctor and Second Doctor stories do not have film anymore. In fact, the Second Doctor was hit worse - he only has I believe six or seven complete episodes. And, in one of those cases, they had to animate two of those episodes. (That said, I still wonder why they won't do an animation for "The Tenth Planet" episode four - that's the first regeneration story, and they could still use that little bit of footage they do have. :-\ ) |

Well, Mel, I'm talking with tons of people who purchased the GAH DVD sets, and they are saying that the picture quality is really great, if not amazing.
I just think that the budget was very limited at the time, and GAH had no great production values to begin with. So we must rejoice, because Anchor Bay did a splendid job on what they were given.

The flying FX in seasons one and two will look a bit grainy due to the fact they shot the flying and background plates on 35mm film, then transfered it to video for compositing, then after completing the fx footage transfering it back to 35mm. That being said, check out the flying in the 2nd seasons The Lost Diablo. That episode after being shot was transferred to video for editing, and remained on video for airing. The flying FX did not have to be transfered back to film and it's the brightest sharpest flying FX in the series. Then for the 3rd season they went to the Zoptic system which was a whole different ballgame, and they no longer had to do the film to tape, tape back to film method any longer. |

Oh, no... I'm not complaining. I think it's excellent too - you see some details in the show you might not have in the old days. This also includes some details in the acting of all three characters. My reference to "Doctor Who" was that some of the videos of that show were wiped, and lost forever. With "GAH" we get not only excellent pictures, we also have every single episode - yes, that includes "GAHeroine," but it was just a test pilot, not really supposed to be shown in the first place.  |

By the way, by using the expression "a little grainy", do you mean THEY (the flying scenes) look VERY bad, or just a little "murky" or not well defined?

No the grain in the flying scenes do not make them look bad. The images are just not quite as crisp/sharp as the non-effects footage. |

Anyway, Anchor Bay did miracles with it. I'm glad that our beloved classic series has been preserved from time. Who knows... maybe in the future to come they will do a FURTHER restoration for the Blue Ray format. |
