I think they only did that so we knew Bill wasn't in charge. Some people might not have picked up on the nonverbals that Culp was doing.

Personally, the ONE thing that really irritates me about this episode is Sheila's voice coming from Bill's mouth. Do his vocal chords magically change when he's possessed? Might've been more interesting if they'd cast June Foray as Sheila. LOL. Other than that, love this episode! ;D June Foray, "and now here's a dimension we hope you really like"............LOL, Welcome to the board!

Well, if irises change color when one is possessed, then, yes, vocal cords can change, too! That's why the supernatural is CREEPY; bizarre things like that can happen. We may not be able to scientifically reason why, but hey, strange things do happen in "real" life.

The only thing that gets me on the vocal cords is how Ralph wouldn't recognize Bill's voice is feminine when Bill asks for his gun. That's the only confusing part to me, but I think the eyes the most really made it work. Second comes Carlini with his stare in that last snippet of the capture scene... very spooky, though I felt he was grossly underused in the ep.

I think it was a dub to let the audience know still. Some people and scenes did not show Bill's eyes that clearly so the dubbed vocal cords helped us to know it was her even if it was supposed to sound like Bill.

I know WHY they did it. I just didn't like it. ;D And thanks for the welcome. There are a few familiar faces here.

This is an episode I always remembered from the original run in the early '80s. It scared me back then, as I was only a kid of about 8 or so. Of course now, I don't find the "beast" at all scary, but possessed Bill is still creepy as hell! Ralph's reaction when he realises & then has the gun pointed at him, is a powerful moment. Both Katt & Culp acted their cotton socks off in that scene! This episode is one of my favourites. Also, I tend not to scrutinise '80s shows too much, as they just don't stand up! These days, audiences are much more savvy, so most shows are made accordingly. With TGAH, I just enjoy the innocent fun, the great acting & the witty dialogue. Feel the love. dolfyn. ;D

Really? I have always found that the older shows tend to stand up better over time because they are not based on the flashy aspects people seem to want anymore. They are based on characters and chemistry more than just story.

^ Sorry, I should've been clearer about what I meant. When I say they don't stand up to scrutiny, I mean when it comes to: repetitive use of footage & sounds, lack of story arc continuity (although TGAH wasn't too bad with that), sudden disappearance of characters with no real explanation, use of the same supporting actors playing different roles in multiple episodes, stuff like that. Audiences weren't as discerning back then & mostly didn't notice, whereas now we have whole websites dedicated to spotting these things! ;D Feel the love. dolfyn.

I see. I agree that the reuse of stock footage and such could get old. Plus, I always loved how a bad guy would show up one day, but be a good guy the next day. ;D

I just guessed that Maxwell had his back turned and was mumbling slightly and Ralph was too distracted (i.e. freaked out!) with the fact he watched a man die and wake up to really notice.

I still think that it was because Bill was supposed to sound normal, but the female voice was more for our benefit in the audience if we could not always see Bill's eyes.

Or at least be briefly dead and not only regain consciousness in the hospital after being unconscious for who knows how long, within 5-10 minutes get up, get dressed to get out of there. I've wondered too if the dub was more for the viewer's benefit, but the debate in fanfics I've read on the subject some say Ralph heard Bill's voice and others say that Sheila's voice can be heard instead of the possed person's.

Well, I would like to Juanita's take on it or SJC's take on it. I will continue to believe the way that the dub was for viewer's benefit, regardless of what other fanfic people think.

I gotta agree 100% with HD, here. The voice change was pretty obviously, to me, to have viewers know Sheila was clearly in charge. I thought it was a great addition to the episode.

I've wondered too if the dub was more for the viewer's benefit, but the debate in fanfics I've read on the subject some say Ralph heard Bill's voice and others say that Sheila's voice can be heard instead of the possed person's. Reading the past two comments on this, I think I wasn't clear. As I said, the debate is in fanfiction - as I said - both views have been expressed. Some think Ralph did hear Shelia's voice, others didn't. Personally, I think on TV it was done for the viewer's benefit in this case. You can't always see Bill's eyes being blue, and given that at the time colored contacts were hard lenses and painful, it'd be hard to wear for long periods of time. Plus, as Jo's said and vouched when she first came on board, some people still had black and white TVs as their only TV and wouldn't be able to see the difference in eye color. Because of this, it was another reason to have the voice change. Now of course, TVs are pretty much only made to show pictures in color. Fanfiction of course is bye the bye - anyone can write anything they want to on this or other subjects. More than likely, however, it was done simply to let people know who was whom.

The way I always saw it was that Ralph did hear Sheila's voice, but didn't notice the first line.... "Conversation's over, kid. What happened to my gun?" because it was sort of whispered. *shrug* Feel the love. dolfyn. ;D
