Does anyone know what the pilot of ROCKFORD was? Do people count the TOMA spin-off or do they count a different one? I was watching THE ROCKFORD FILES tonight online and I was curious as to which pilot people think of when they think of this show. Thanks.

The 90 minute thing with Lindsay Wagner, Billy Mumy, and that other guy as Rockford's father.
I understand that it's not currently available. Fortunately, I still have the official VHS release from the 1990s.
I loved the show as a little boy; I've come to relate to certain aspects of it as a middle-aged man.

Actually the pilot episode (Lindsay Wagner one, AKA "Backlash of the Hunter") was released with the second season DVD set. (Why they did it that way, who knows). I believe all six seasons of Rockford are now out on DVD.
Rocky: "Lookit that cut! Two inches to the left you'd be missing that eye!" Jim: "Well, look at it this way Rocky. Two inches to the right he woulda missed me completely!"
;D

That is odd, but I'm glad to hear it is easily (if somewhat confusingly) available on DVD.

That's weird. Ya'd think they'd put the pilot with the FIRST season... LOL
Anyway, I went back and re-read your question HD and now I'm confused. Plus I'm too lazy to go pull out my Rockford Bible but...I thought the TOMA episode introducing Rockford wasn't produced? Or am I missing something? Or should I just go dig out my bible and look again...? ROFL

Anyone ever watch TOMA? Was it just BACKLASH OF THE HUNTER and Toma did the tag scenes?

I watched Toma when it was originally broadcast, but I was too young to remember much about it.
I do know there are TWO versions of the Rockford pilot, the original as broadcast on NBC, and the padded 2 part version for syndication.

So I got the complete series of THE ROCKFORD FILES. It's great because it has all of the episodes in order, but does not have special features. As I was watching, it was fun to see a lot of the crossovers between scenes used in ROCKFORD and GAH. There are also some good plot points between ROCKFORD and THE A-TEAM. I do not have the eight movies though. Maybe for Christmas.

My apologies for not ever noticing you asked “what’s the original pilot” I assume you were asking about the two versions I was talking about. The pilot aired in a 90 minute time slot originally on NBC. For syndication Universal padded the episode out to make it 2 parts instead of one.
Congratulations on buying the series, there’s a lot of good episodes through the whole run.
I don’t have the TV movies either, it was great seeing Garner and the others back. I enjoy those too, but in the end I like the original series the best. Still, I really need to pick those up.

I'm thinking about picking them up from a Christmas list or something. Okay, so BACKLASH OF THE HUNTER is the pilot. I have that on the complete series set. There are just no special features. If you don't have it, you can get it for $15 at WalMart.

Wow…the Rockford complete series on DVD is only $15 at Walmart? I have the Blu-ray set, so I don’t need the DVDs but that’s a great price.

James Whitmore Jr. is great as a guest star in this series too. He reminds me a lot of his character from WIZARDS AND WARLOCKS.

Oh yeah for sure, he was always good as a guest star. His role in Hunter is a bit like his role in There’s Just No Accounting.
