Greetings all,
I recently picked up the Spanish versions of the DVDs off eBay. They're less expensive than the Japanese versions and they have the original music. However, when watching them I thought something was "off". It sounded like Ralph and Pam's voice was a little higher than normal. Sure enough I compared the Spanish versions to my tvshrine.com versions and the episodes run 3-4 minutes shorter on the Spanish versions. Nothing is missing though! So I can only conclude the playback is a little faster (at least on Season 3/4 - Season 1/2 hasn't shown up yet). It's not the player as I converted them to iTunes format so I can watch them on my tablet and the length is the same. I'm bummed because the picture quality is the way better than the tvshrine.com DVDs. Has anyone else that has the Spanish versions noticed this?

Welcome kitkatt While I don't own the Spanish set, I'm going to guess that you are hearing what I call the dreaded PAL "speed up" I was told that the set is Region 0, is that correct? Even if the set is Region 0, the episodes could be PAL encoded which would still cause the 4% speed up in the soundtrack. The U.S. release of Tales of The Gold Monkey DVD set is a perfect example of this. Even though it's a region 1 NTSC release, the episodes were originally PAL encoded from the release that happened overseas, and that's what was released here. Everyone sounds as if they sucked a bit of helium. There is a way (I wish I could tell you more about it) that people who rip the episodes to their PC have ran the shows through some sort of program that slows the soundtrack back down to it's original level. I'm not sure if that could help you with viewing the series on a tablet. I don't know much about it as I watch everything on my TV with players. A bit more info, with the series hitting Blu-ray overseas one does not have to worry about the speed up on BD. It was/is only a problem on PAL videotapes, and PAL DVDs. Hope this helps.

Greenguy, you are correct! I had never heard of this problem before. I only own two other DVD sets that are PAL encoded and I didn't now those shows well enough to notice. Based on your comments I did some research and now I understand the problem. There are a couple of solutions; one easy and one time consuming. The easy one is to rip the DVDs to your machine and play them back on VLC. VLC has a slow down/speed up setting. I just set it to play at 96% speed and it sounds great!
However, that doesn't work on my tablets so I did the more time consuming method of re-encoding them in "avidemux". It has settings to convert from PAL to NTSC and it slows down the audio as well to keep it in sync with the video. So now I have all the eps converted in mp4 format to play on my TV, tablet, etc. and they all sound great. I can finally ditch my tvshrine.com eps because the picture quality is so much better.
Now do I go back and do the same thing for those other DVD sets I bought a couple years ago? Decisions, decisions.

Congrats kitkatt! I'm glad you corrected the speed up!
Thanks for listed the info on what you used. I will be taking the time to use "avidemux" to re-encode my Tales of The Gold Monkey episodes. I bought that set on the release date and have only watched the set once because that "speed up" drives me crazy.
