The actress says that its because ABC wasn't ready for a brown female super hero on TV. I think its more they knew it would suck before it even started. I still say with the current super hero movie high going on, it would be a perfect time for the GAH film. Irritated me to no end that she thinks this is why it wasn't picked up - she is a decent comedian so that's definitely not the issue. I think it's the facts as mentioned it was going to be a half hour sitcom and played for laughs. It's satire, which does mean there's comedy, but it's not slapstick - and yes I even include Ralph's crashes which a lot of times put him into tricky situations or delayed rescues/etc. Even the first crash - the header into the billboard, was funny but serious because a. he's knocked out and b. his ex-wife uses it to gain some sort of benefit in court. The problem is however - they keep wanting to go the extremes on it, either too serious (i.e. Gotham/most DC or Marvel shows) or slapstick. Honestly, the only remake/continuation I've seen that comes close to being accurate was that fan made one where the suit cloned itself and gave a copy to a cheerleader. Sure, she was annoying, but they had the right cast for it and understood a lot of the charm and success of the original.

GAH was a blend. Drama, action and comedy. But more character comedy and clever writing then as you say, slapstick.
The crashes and him lighting cars on fire wasn't put there for cheap laughs. That was part of the whole 'Ralph not being able to use the suit properly' theme of the show.
Which is something they missed with the female Ghostbusters. The original was funny because it was witty and had clever dialogue and character interaction.
From what I have seen of the female one its a lot of cheap jokes and McCarthy slapstick.
And probably would have been the same here.

So this reboot is really and truly dead?

Probably just as well. Why mess with perfection?

You know, with the current trend if super hero films, might be a good time to shop around a feature again. Though as I mentioned in the TV Show section, the SHAZAM film seems an awful lot like a GAH film - regular guy (or kid) gets super powers and has no idea at first how they work or what he can do with them.
