I was just watching this episode and when Bill and O'Neal are in the bar and Ralph and Pam arrive, Ralph introduces Pam as his fiance. They weren't engaged then, right, so why did he call her his fiance?
Thanks!

I honestly don't remember hearing that, but at the same time, I can't seem to recall when they got engaged either.

I kind of thought they were always engaged.

I kind of thought they were always engaged. Early on in Season 1, I don't recall Ralph introducing her that way...

I watched it last night. He does introduce her as that.
Makes me wonder if an episode like THIS IS THE ONE THE SUIT IS MEANT FOR was written earlier or LILACS was meant to air later.

I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought. The opening scene with Bill and Ralph was just great. Both played their parts so well.
I loved the idea of solving cold cases from the FBI basement too. I wish that had been followed up on.
I like Bill's awkwardness with the ladies he likes.
I hate the beach scene. How did O'Neill not hear/see Ralph during that segment? Bill even tells him to go to it. *Shakes head*
I like how the creators were willing to let Bill add a new suit power.

My guess it was just an error on Culp's part as a writer, it is written that way in the script. I'm pretty sure Lilac's was shot early in the 2nd season, not long after Sellecca returned from having her baby. Culp's first draft is dated Nov. 20th, 1981, and the 2nd draft the 25th. My copy has a stamp on it that indicates ABC received the script (for approval, network suggestions, etc) on Nov. 30th. I think it was shot, and ABC held it back because it was not typical of what the network wanted out of the show at that time. On another note, fans should check out the first season I Spy episode called Tatia. It sure seems to me Culp was influenced by that episode when he wrote Lilac's.

I was correct, the Lilac's broadcast episode has a copyright of 1981. It was filmed way early in the 2nd season.
I like the more complicated plot of this script, and it's more serious tone fits much better with the first season episodes than the 2nd. One can imagine it fitting in as the last 1st season show. The real last 1st season episode was supposed to have been Culp's "Long Fall..." script.

That's good to know. I agree that it seems more like a first season one in the lines of HEROES. Still a good script overall. I wish it had been referenced again though for continuity, something this show was never big on.

I wish it had been referenced again though for continuity, something this show was never big on. TGAH referenced previous events more than many other TV series did at the time. Most TV shows from that period never brought up anything that happened in other episodes. It was as if the characters had their life slate cleaned every week. TGAH sometimes threw in sly references to previous episodes "dead guys talkin' to us" etc. I agree though, after such a big deal over O'Neal I think it sucked that she was never brought up again.

GAH did a pretty decent job of occasionally referencing previous events in episodes such as Train of Thought, Desperado, and Dreams. They even threw in a nice reference to Operation Spoilsport in The Newlywed Game. I would've liked to have seen some follow up with the Palmer Bradshaw character, but it seems "Crazy Carlisle" ended up becoming his replacement.

I agree that GAH was better than most shows with it. They had to be with the super powers and the Greenguys especially; but it wasn't their strong suit (pardon the pun) either.

Hey GAH Fans. Can you guess how much a 1980's vintage Greatest American Hero lunch box worth...?

Hey GAH Fans. Can you guess how much a 1980's vintage Greatest American Hero lunch box worth...? Sadly, there are no 1980's vintage Greatest American Hero lunch boxes. That's only one of many missed chances for official merchandise related to the series that never happened to to the Warner lawsuit against the series. Here's a link to the short version of the case. www.copyright.gov/fair-use/summaries/warnerbros-abc-2dcir1981.pdf
