I know a lot has been done on this topic already and people could go through and piece together all the different threads and comments on this topic. However, for those people who may be new to the show and the board, I thought this thread might help them realize what they are missing. Some of us know that songs have been pulled and replaced, but some people might not until they come to this board. For that reason, I thought that people might like to list by episode what music was altered or changed...maybe even telling people where in the episode it was switched. This might help more people realize just how much the show has changed BECAUSE of the music. I don't have my VHS copies at my apartment, so someone else will have to get the ball rolling on it...I just thought I would throw this idea out there.

Bad idea I guess...it seems that this has been read, but stagnant since I left.

In my case, I don't know where everything's been altered. Only thing I know is what songs are gone and/or replaced.
I mean, some are obvious, i.e. "Eve of Destruction," and a lot of "Classical Gas" but others are not so much. Example, if I didn't know that "Pinball Wizard" was gone from "Wizards and Warlocks," I'd never known. The change to me is subtle because the music (and I'm guessing it's when Ralph plays the arcade game,) sounds to me something that would come from the arcade games of that time.

Pilot:
-Help Me Rhonda (Beach Boys) when the bus is pulling out of the parking lot, leaving on the field trip
-Space Oddity (David Bowie) at the scene where Bill's just driven off, leaving Ralph in the desert with the package and Ralph turns to walk back and loses the instruction book. (
-Rocket Man (Elton John) a couple of parts in the episode, one I remember where Ralph and Pam are driving in her VW bug, and Ralph almost runs off of the road because he's getting a hologram in the side view (rear view?) mirror.

Rocket Man also played when he is flying home after stopping the attack on the President.

No, the theme song plays when he's flying home after saving the president. That's how it was on FX, I have it on tape.

houdiniderek: you're saying you have a copy of the GAH pilot (from where did you get this, by the way?) where Rocket Man is playing at the VERY END of the pilot, right after Ralph flies off with the spotlight after saving the president??? I just want to confirm because I have the pilot recorded from like 4 different sources and none of them have it - just the theme, which is actually the first time in the show we ever heard the theme with lyrics.

I will try to find it this weekend when I trek home for the holidays...maybe I am mistaken...as miss davidson is usually right. If I am right though, cool.

She was right...I did have it confused with another night flight sequence. I forgot SPACE ODDITY was in the pilot...I need to see if I have the whole series on VHS...that is a HUGE oversight. Kudos, miss davidson.

I still think it would be handy to have a list, but apparently no one reads or cares about the music anymore...too much socialization to accept things. IF Greenguy ever returns and reads this, he should add the original song list to his episode index...I think it would work great.

If you mean a complete list of all the songs used in GAH, there is one onlline over at Tony's GAH Yahoo group. I made it myself, compiled from other lists found on the Internet, my own material as well as input from GAH song writer Stephen Geyer himself. I think it covers everything. Or, if you'd prefer, I can email the list (it's in Microsoft Excel format) to anyone who would like to see it. Just let me know.

That's cool...didn't know it existed, which is why I thought one should be made. That is awesome...do you think you could post the link to the Yahoo Group so people can go peruse it?

It's already there. When you're in the group, just look under Files > Miscellaneous and the file is titled: Greatest American Hero - Songs.xls

Anyone have a chance to check this out yet? I'd be curious to know opinions on it.

Can you find it without being a part of the group? I never have any luck with things usually when I have to join them. I like this board because you don't HAVE to be a member to participate. So, is there a way to access the song list without joining?

I think one of the worst song changes is taking out SPACE ODDITY and ROCKET MAN and inserting that stupid THIS IS NOT YOUR TOWN song or whatever it is called. In the pilot, I actually like the song they replace HELP ME RHONDA with...I never understood why it was there except for the fact that a character was named Rhonda.

TGAH fans should be comforted that they are not the only shows to have music changed. The A-Team had minimal changes, but it was there...although EVE OF DESTRUCTION stayed intact. In another show I watched a couple of years ago, KEEN EDDIE had a lot of songs that were cut by the studio. Only a handful stayed. We are not alone in our fight for authenticity. Unfortunately, the almight dollar keeps us from being very effective.
