Assuming "The Greatest American Hero" would be a big budget, major motion picture, here are some of the people I think would make the cut.
Tommy Lee Jones as Bill Maxwell
He played a gruff, slightly sarcastic deputy marshall in "The Fugitive" and "U.S. Marshalls" and he played a gruff, slightly sarcastic "special agent" involved with space aliens in "Men In Black" and "Men In Black II". Put those experiences together, and you've got a man who could play Bill Maxwell to a "T"
Jim Carrey as Ralph Hinkley
He's already played a mild mannered "Everyman" suddenly endowed with extraordinary powers twice, ("The Mask" and "Bruce Almighty") and he can bring a bit of his famous wackiness to the role as well. Imagine Jim Carrey as Ralph Hinkley hurtling out of control as he tries to fly for the first time, and you'll understand what I'm talking about.
Janeane Garofalo as Pam Davidson
OK, I'll be honest here, I've only ever seen her in "Mystery Men" and doing standup on Comedy Central, but based on that, I'd say she has what it takes to play a slightly sarcastic feminist who has to put up with suddenly being the "girlfriend" of a real life secret superhero.
Well, that's all I can think of now.

Hey! I like that idea! And that's a new suggestion, too!
Although I am sure HD would prefer someone else play Pam... but I think Garafalo could work!
There have been a lot of fan speculations for the new cast. I think Tommy Lee and Richard Dean Anderson are both pretty much neck in neck, as far as fan wishes go...
And Welcome to the board! Hope to see you post more!

I think Jim Carrey is an interesting and possibly workable choice for exactly the reasons you mentioned. I think Tommy Lee Jones OR Richard Dean Anderson could work, but I prefer the latter. As for the Pam choice, I think the Pam person should be HOT...and your choice is not. There are great choices in the comedic vein, so maybe Sarah Silverman.

As much as I love Jim Carrey, do you think he'd be good for Ralph? He's closer to Culp's age when RC was in GAH... Carrey is 45 or so (my age, in other words).

I think he could potentially play him, yes. After all, he looked pretty young in some of the movies he did...makeup is getting better all the time. I think there are better choices, but if you are going for a comedic group, then Carrey is a good choice.

The problem character to cast I think really is Ralph, given that he is the one who deals with the most changes. You have to get someone who can do those changes at the drop of the hat.
Adam Sandler and Jim Carrey would've been great, given some of their recent performances, but I do have to say, it'd be harder to cast them now then say a few years ago (Ironically too, as they'd probably not be as strong now.) I have trouble at times getting a good person about that age for Ralph, as for example, the guy who plays Phil in "Phil of the Future" could be good in the role... but he's in his teens.
Pam, there's several choices here too, but you have to have someone who will be a strong character but can play a little bit of the slapstick humor. It's hard to cast the right person for that, given how women are portrayed at times on TV and in the movies. I mean, if you watch the series "The Dukes of Hazzard," Catherine Bach was beautiful but could both do humor and kick butt in her own way. I didn't see that at all in the Jessica Simpson portrayal... and that's just from the commercials.
As far as Bill, I'm like most and it'd be either Jones or Anderson. Which one... hmmm, I think Anderson would be better given he's got the scruffy demeanor down and fits in with the demeanor of Bill a little more IMO, both in appearance and mannerisms. If he couldn't do it, then yes, Jones would be my second choice.

I show a bit of fear for the making of the movie tonight. In an IRC chat I go to, someone mentioned a movie being on and I followed it with a joke naming a title of a movie that could be a legit answer to the mention.. I had to go to IMDB.com to remember the name of the movie. Anyways, I fear for the GAH movie because finding the name of the movie I was referring to, I found something else. Apparently coming to theaters in 2007 is Dallas... Who plays J. R. Ewing? You might want to sit down for this...
...........
..........
.........
No really, sit down.
............
.............
John Travolta is playing J. R. Ewing..... *sigh*

I already knew about that spoiler, and yes... i'm the same way about "Dallas" (though we watched "Dynasty" and "Knotts Landing" more at my home)
As far as "GAH"... we'll probably end up with a young up-and-comer as Ralph who cannot act but looks the role and Bill will be someone who is overly pompous (Bill fans... IMHO he does have some of this, but it's endearing. I mean what Bill doesn't like: A stuffed shirt.)
Just saw a suggestion on IMDB for David Spade playing Ralph. While I like some of his work ("Just Shoot Me" and the voice of the prince on "The Emperor's New Groove," he wouldn't quite work as Ralph. One of his students, maybe, but not Ralph. He plays his characters too cocky for it to work right.

Still think it's funny too they're filming (or at the time scouting) locations in Canada. I don't think they've been to Dallas. Irony here too... Southfork still exists. Unless the owners didn't want to really muck about with the bedrooms or something (they have themed rooms), I don't see why they didn't use it.

All right, getting back to the original topic of this thread.
For those of you who've said that Jim Carrey might be too old to play Ralph, well, you might want to consider all those thirty something actors who have played teenagers on various television shows, such as 21 Jump Street and Smallville, for some time now. In other words, in this business, it's not so much how old you are, but how old, or rather, how young you can act.

True, and personally, out of the two, I think Adam Sandler would be the strongest one. I like Jim Carrey as a potential too, but I think even William Katt thought Sandler would be great in the role. (Sorry about going OT here too, BTW captainmarbles. I have a tendency to do that. )

I agree, CM, about being able to act young.
But the question is whether the character would have to be in their 20s anyway? I mean, couldn't the hero just as easily be 18 or 40 for it to work?
In many ways, if I had to guess, many of us fans want to see the magic recreated with a new team (if the old one can't do it - which I think we all agree is the case). But I think the chemistry between the cast would have to be more important than a big big name.
I personally would hate to see Jim Carrey play the GAH. Nothing against him, and I like his work, but I would prefer someone less well known, who would actually have the feel of just your average person on the street.

I agree. You might be able to get away with bigger names in the Pam and Bill parts, but I agree that the person playing Ralph needs to have that average Joe kind of look and feel...even to the audience. They have to think: Could this be the guy next door?

I suppose if it's a movie the age might not matter unless they wanted to do sequels or a series again. A younger actor gives more leeway of possibilities like stunts or pratt falls and stuff. I mean even though Jesse did th e stunts William Katt did quite a bit of his own stuff which added realism to the character.

I agree. While the new person probably wouldn't be allowed to hang off a helicopter strut like Katt did (because of too many lawsuits nowadays. ), you should allow for several pratfalls and such. As you said, it makes the character more realistic and fun to watch instead of "There's Joe taking off toward the car... now it's Paul jumping in it. You know, other than the helicopter strut, one of my favorite stunts Katt did (though not big) was his jumping into the beetle as though it was a hurdle in the pilot. It was simple, but anyone who's jumped over hurdles or over railings (I've done the latter in a mascot costume too in college), knows it's not that easy.

Or they could film scenes of the actual actors doing stunts in Canada. That's why parts of Superman (the real one, with Reeve) were done up there, 'cause they could do things the US doesn't allow.

The X-Files (Seasons 1 - 5) where filmed up there in canada (Vancouver) and that's also where they film Stargate SG-1.

I think they favor Vancouver BC because it's a lot cheaper to film up there, and it's civilization too (heck, not too far north of Seattle even!) Could also be for stunts and pyrotechnics, too, dunno.
I know U2 had more leeway for pyrotechnics at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver BC than they did in Tacoma, WA (the biggest city just south of Seattle). Saw them at both venues in 1992 (and yes, they rocked.)
There's one ep of SG-1 that I think they actually filmed on location: "Seth." It was supposed to take place in the Skagit Valley (north of Seattle), and I think it really did. Looked just like it. See how beautiful it is on that show? That's what it's like where I live. Small wonder I don't want to move, huh?
Y'all should find and download "Rocks & Trees," a most excellent and funny SG-1 songvid. It's got the song by the Arrogant Worms. I can give y'all the link to it if you want it (and many other SG-1 songvids.)
Oopsie, I thought we were in the OT area... another really hysterical SG-1 vid is "Stargate Cantina," based on the spoof song "Star Wars Cantina" which of course was based on "Copacabana." You'll die when you watch it, esp if you're both a Stargate SG-1 and Star Wars fan like I am. To give you an idea:
Han - O'Neill Luke - Daniel Obi Wan - Bra'tac Chewie - Teal'c R2D2 - Siler Yoda - Thor Leia - Samantha
