From everything I've read, it sounds like NBC wanted to bring the 'real' show back, but Katt and his sour "I hate wearing that stupid red outfit" self didn't want to do it anymore, so this what we ended up with. <tearing up>

From everything I've read, it sounds like NBC wanted to bring the 'real' show back, but Katt and his sour "I hate wearing that stupid red outfit" self didn't want to do it anymore, so this what we ended up with. <tearing up> Even if he would have wanted to, remember Sellecca was starring Hotel for ABC. I for one would not wanted to see Ralph without Pam. Unless ABC and NBC could have come to some sort of terms similar to what happened when Richard Anderson was co-starring on The Six Million Dollar Man on ABC, and The Bionic Woman on NBC. We would have seen Ralph and Bill, without her. 2nd, I have no idea if Katt would have came back, where NBC would have placed it on the schedule. Heroine would have ended up at 6pm on Sunday night, at that time still a "deathslot" for many series, due to the "educational material" required by the FCC for any series running at that time back then. Would TGAH returning to network tv been given the same timeslot? I don't know, but I did not want to see a watered down kiddie version of my favorite series. That happened enough during the shows original run. |

That's a great point, Scott. I didn't consider the whole timeslot and 'educational' angle - and I suppose we could have still ended up with a 'watered' down version of the show even with Katt and Culp returning, assuming the script writer would have been the same - not like Cannell was helping in that area anymore...

Shame is we will never know. Just as the reunion Katt wanted to do in the late 90's never saw the light. So we can just guess on how that might have turned out.

I thought Katt said that the suit was annoying but he still liked working on the show until the script got bad. Then they started to have Ralph battling sea monsters and unreal beings and all. It just all fell apart after that. And I agree that watching The Greatest American Heroine in fast forward is the best way to watch it.  |

It just all fell apart after that. And I agree that watching The Greatest American Heroine in fast forward is the best way to watch it. That's what I felt when listening to his interview on Season 1. I've been in a couple of plays and speech competitions where I loved the part, but disliked the costume. This was especially true when it came to wearing a flowerpot basket on my head as a hat. It bugs me to no end when people think "So and so hated the costume, therefore he/she hated the role." That's not entirely true, as the true test of an actor is how well the person portrays the role in spite of costume. In this case, when I watch the show, I see Ralph Hinkley, not Katt in a funny costume. I think if he disliked the role itself, he might not have taken the part to begin with nor would have suggested the reunion. I do agree on one thing, even without fast forwarding, Holly rambles more than Rodriguez ever did. In Rodriguez' case, it was funny and added to his character. In Holly's case, it detracted. |

I hated it because she came across as very put together and not superficial, but then she was commenting about how the shoes did not match the outfit and then that scene with her brushing her hair. I think they would have made a superficial issue for her at some point, but she was too flighty to work well.

Just a bad idea all around to me. When I first heard they tried to bring the show back with a new pilot, I was thrilled. Then I heard the title "The Greatest American Heroine" and I shuddered. Still do...

If it was cast right, Ralph had given up the suit in a logical manner (these first two biggest gripes), and the woman had a different partner, it might've worked.
What I think made it not work was Bill was with a new partner and fans were going to say "We miss Ralph." I've said it before and I'll say it again, the series didn't work when you didn't have all three characters (and yes, at least Bill and Ralph) in the stories.
There was a potential to have a woman in the suit, but it was just handled so poorly overall. I mean, she could've been teamed up with a different partner and the sparks could fly, she could've been dating and couldn't tell the boyfriend, making for some interesting fight scenes. Just flat out didn't work, and best forgotten (even if it is canon.)

I'll concede something... I seem to be the only regular visitor to this board that actually LIKES GAHeroine, lol! It's flawed, yes, but so is GAH, as we all well know. Overall, I really liked this one little hour we saw. I would've definitely continued watching it, if it had been picked up.

The concept is great and could've worked. If I didn't like the concept or its potential, I wouldn't be writing my spinoff series. In this case, I just don't like how it was executed, and that's why it's panned so much and why it didn't work.  There were too many things wrong and I felt a bit contrary to the show's original premise. Holly seemed to know all the powers right (which ruined it there too). Example, in my spinoff while I have probs with making Aidan worry how the suit'll affect her, she does have problems with the suit (ex. holographs will still make her dizzy at times). Holly, even flying, really didn't, which btw, I think the flying was hokey, she looks like she's bobbing on a string. Ralph's first flight was more reasonable, knock out and all. Ralph was extrodinarily out of character and I feel the bit was forced so they could have a "reason" for him to leave. Had there been a more logical reason like he and Pam wanted to have children or the suit did something that was the greatest gift of all (i.e. bring someone back from the brink of death), then the handover would've been much better. Him losing it for ego is a. lame and b. contrary to the way Ralph was in the series. Personally, if I were Katt, even if I hated the suit, I'd hate the way I gave it away in the spinoff. Even how he's found out is lame. C'mon, he's dealt with people before and the suit, and they either just smiled and thought he was crazy, were kids, or were unconscious and didn't even know he was wearing it? Why would the general populace believe suddenly that there's an ordinary person who could help others. It's unreasonable and as I said before a forced way to have him inflate his ego and make the greenguys unhappy. Also, the three greenguys is wrong too. It works best with one and the assistant, IMHO, and could've done a handover with just the one. This other way made them seem like gods, and they weren't as we see in "Divorce" where their planet's destroyed. Culp was, sorry to say, only a minor saving grace for the episode and even he wasn't the same. While he'd be easy on the eyes for Bill fans, he was obviously, at least my opinion, going to be turned into a shadow of what Bill was. Look at the fight scene, Bill gets beaten up more than he beats up the bad guys. That was atypical to him in the original. He did at least for the most part daze or KO some of the baddies in fights. I still think a new partner for Holly would've worked better and, if the handover and such was handled better, I'd probably would've watched the show myself, but I'd honestly would've wondered where Ralph was. From the way it reads to me from the pilot, if the show had been picked up, it wouldn't have lasted more than one season if that if it went the way of the pilot. It might've lasted longer if they recast Holly (don't balk, they recast Face after "The A-Team" pilot with the much better Dirk Benedict). It wasn't going to work with the way Holly was in the ep. Even at 8, which I was when this was attempted, I'd said this was hokey, and this is someone who watched the Ghostbusters series with a gorilla as a teammate. Just my $0.02 cents.  |

I'll also concede that the greenguys realized that just because someone knew about the suit, didn't mean that they would automatically give it to that person if the original wearer died or left. They looked at all aspects of the person, good and bad, before giving the person the OK. Just because Ralph had an ego trip, they realized there was enough good in him to let him choose the next wearer. We don't know about J.J. Beck or any other wearer getting the chance.
I've felt that they were dismissive about Bill because, while he had his good points, they had enough concerns to not let him be the wearer. I've felt, though this is never shown, that they didn't give Bill the suit because he gave up on Ralph when the kid had his ego trip. (Of course, the only way to be sure is through a script, which Lauren has a copy of). Throughout the series, Ralph never really gave up on Bill. Sure, Ralph's not perfect (and had a visible temper), as they show (though out of character) here, but he did try his best.
Conversely, they might have just been concerned that Bill'd get hurt as well, as he was getting older and such. Bill wasn't perfect either and they probably had a feeling that in the suit, they couldn't teach an old dog new tricks. Why let him be the new teammate.... only reason I see is that Ralph let him have his memories and the greenguys couldn't quite make the world forget if Ralph or Pam was the new teammate. A new wearer with Bill would be better. The only thing better than that would've been let Ralph and Bill retire on good terms with the GG's and let Holly and a new teammate take over. Might've taken off if they had a new team. Just my two cents.

Wow, a reunion... that would've been so cool. Too bad they didn't do it in anticipation of the DVDs coming out some day. Would've been as good as a new movie (I'm assuming with the original cast intact, which a movie most likely won't have, but that's another thread). Granted, all our faves would've been much older, but still, would've been great fodder for something like, Holly's dead, the suit needs to go to another team, and this time all three of them join in on the decision and mentor the new suit wearer. (Just re-reading some older posts that I haven't read before, playing catch up here.) |

It was too confusing and Holly was annoying. However, I think if they did attempt to separate it better (such as giving Ralph an in character reason to leave the suit) and better casting of Holly, it'd been given the chance to go a season. There was and I feel still is the potential for humor and such with a woman in the suit. |

He can spend his time doing what he wants, such as looking for a good replacement for Ralph, and then zipping off with Holly without needing to worry about losing his job. There's no Carlisle hassling him. It's about time! Maxwell deserved to be trusted to be on his own as an FBI agent, even if it was unorthodox.
My mind believes there very well may have been some behind the scenes government help in securing Maxwell his freedom and higher FBI position, but that works for me, too.

Mona I have always wondered about that, Mona. After all those years, you think he WOULD have moved up, but HOW did he do it? Carlisle wasn't going to promote him. I think that he might have been moved up a little, but nothing to the level of Carlisle...and I bet that had the series been picked up, Carlisle (or someone other than Holly) would have been there to be Bill's foil. It's the questions like these that make me wish I had the 2-hour script for HEROINE to see some of what we missed...maybe those questions WERE answered. |
