That's interesting. I just looked it up in Wikipedia and there was a lot of info about making paint from red and yellow ochre. I guess it's some kind of a natural clay. Funny thing is, I remember Devil's Peak from my days as a tour guide at the musical "TEXAS," but it's been about 7 years since I gave the tour itself. As far as the stones, there is a book called "Metalsmith and Jewelrymaking" that has a list of popular gemstones. It's mostly a casting and chainmaking instruction book, but the stone list helped me with setting the peridot in my cast ring. You might be able to find it at a library, but Hastings also sells the book. (Funny thing is, besides using the book for reference when I make an idiot's delight chain (that's the real name), the gemstone list is also useful for getting last names in individual stories.).
