Yah. Anyways. . . .
Some of us wanted to be Pam. Some of us wanted Ralph. Some of us (like me) wanted both. And for goodness' sake, the show actually held the attention of some of us ADD victims out here! ;D

Please tell me why? I originally watched it for a few reasons. I'm a Superman and general DC fan, who at the time favored the Legion of Superheroes (sis had scored a box of the comics at a garage sale, when they were still drawn by Mike Grell--you know, the great years). I'd also been a science fiction fan since I was 10, and falling in love with Star Trek (it had been released into syndication). I also thought William Katt was cute as a bug, but it wasn't till Season Two that I went ga-ga over Bill and Robert Culp. I never did the entire ga-ga thing over Katt, and I must admit, Pare (sorry, can't do the accent mark) was pretty darned gorgeous, wasn't he? I must admit, I thought some eps were pretty stupid; I think my interest dwindled in Season Three, probably from ABC screwing around with the series so much. Having watched many S2 eps on my friend's DVDs has made me remember all over again why I love Culp and Bill so much. I wish I'd watched some eps while I had the chance, like "Beast in the Black" and "Best Desk Scenario" and a few others people have touted in here, when I had the chance, but ah well, I'll have the DVDs myself some day. In the meantime, I'm doing the long, laborious task of downloading eps; got four so far (well, five if you include the pilot in two parts--took forever to finally get Part II, which I watched last night!) Watching these shows from an almost-44 year old brain, instead of an almost-20 year old brain, brings them into an entirely different light for me. Since it's been so long, it's like I'm seeing them for the very first time. Being able to pause the picture during great poses from Culp is fun too, or playing back a particular few lines (I must've played back "And the price is right! Hold it! Freeze your face!" a few times last night, lol, Bill rocks.)

I gotta bump this one....
I dig GAH, as you all know, because of Bill. Always loved that character, even as a kid. I won't go into a drooling moment...
But watching GAH as a kid and now in DVD form are very different experiences for me.
I always really liked UFOs and the idea of aliens. (For a while I debated becomeing a UFO-ologist. Then I debated being a cosmologist or astronomer until I realized I'd need to know physics... ) But the ideas of "Little Green Guys" scared me and interested me, all at the same time. So the idea that there could be this contact, in a not so scary way, was always fascinating and fun. And the idea that a big strong guy like Bill could be terrified of them, too, made it a little more normal for me to be both intrigued and terrified by them too.
Why do I dig GAH now? I think it's the retro cheese factor of it, wrapped around amazingly funny dialogue and good storylines of friendship...
... that, and Bill Maxwell's butt...

I finally saw the commercial before that campaign moved on.

When I first saw it, I did have trouble recognizing him, but when Goins talked, I realized it was him. The other part that confirmed it was when he smiled and laughed when the camera goes off before his wife in the commercial gets back to him for the pic. Personally, I think he was more believable in the character than the guy who does that diabetes claim in the more recent takes on the ads. I know that's corny, but even with male enhancement drugs, you do have to be believable enough to sell the product. One reason I do not like the Bob ads. I keep thinking he's in pain, not overjoyed with his newfound "confidence."

I love TGAH because I am a huge fan of complicated characters with multiple levels to their personalities. I like seeing those type of characters grow and change and face difficult situations and be challenged. Bill Maxwell to me fits that category exactly. I also have always loved tall, handsome, middle aged men, especially the ones with dark hair and eyes. Hello, Robert Culp!
The story is original, the drama mixed with humor is great, the dialogue is oftentimes wonderful, and the sheer humanity of the show is wonderful.
But, mainly, (is anyone surprised), because of Bill Maxwell.

Chicks, Dames and Broads OH MY! For a minute there I thought I was listening to a scene from "Guys and Dolls." I think that we all dig the show though for our favorite characters though. Some like Ralph, some like Bill and some like Pam. Personally, I like all of them and how they interact with each other. And I like how the show is complete with how they interact and make the craziest of stories work. You can tell when there's one missing in the story (two if you include GAHeroine), and that only shows how well all three worked in the series.

Just wanted to bring this up because it seemed to sum up my own feelings on the matter, lol. I think part of the reason I was never that into super heroes is because they tend to look very conservative, all prim and perfect. Now that was fine for the 1950's, but I wanted something different! ;D Then a few years ago I'm watching VH1's I Love the '80s and they started talking about Greatest American Hero. And here's this ex hippie with a curly mop top, WOW! A super hero with a counter culture vibe and it works! So I guess that's where my initial interest in the show came from. Then I was happy to discover just how well written the show was as well. Chicks digs that too. Btw here's the VH1 I Love the '80s clip I'm talking about ( Start at 10:12[/u][/b]):

I think that's also what intrigues me to Ralph herald - he's NOT perfect. That's also probably why Holly DOES irritate me - she is too perfect, with the only real problem being her ability to fly.
And... I dig his (sometimes) sharp threads - though I have to say the pants with suspenders and the Whitney High sweater jacket were a bit too much. ;D

Yeah what's funny is people are always talking about how Ralph's appeal is that he's a "regular guy." And I do understand that. But I personally liked the character because of how different he was from what you'd expect, lol.

But I personally liked the character because of how different he was from what you'd expect, lol. Exactly, no real chisled features, not doing some sort of glamorous job (though admittedly reporting is not necessarily glamorous), easier to relate to, human, makes mistakes, and a few other things. And I especially love the fact he isn't a reporter - it seems that other areas of superherodom tend to have the characters in some sort of reporting position. You have Superman as a reporter and Spiderman as a photographer. Wonder Woman was at times a secretary.
