To some extent, it's free advertising for the artists and their product. The Beatles probably didn't sell any extra albums off of GAH, we had them all, already. Fair enough.
But I didn't know Blind Faith from a hole in the wall before Jump Street; it was simply before my time. I immediately sought out and purchased a new CD of that 20 year old album after hearing "Can't Find My Way Home" on an episode of 21JS. How many of you did the same? Come on, raise your hands.
and Boom Crash Opera? I'd never heard of them before the fourth season premier of Wiseguy, nor since the fifth season premier of Jump Street (and they were both in the same week, weren't they?). But you can bet your ass that I bought their album as soon as I could find it. I can't say I listen to it much, but every couple of years, I put it in my CD player, turn it all the way up to 11, and listen to that song. I'm assuming that there are other songs on the album, but who knows...
I can see The Beatles, The 'Stones, and The Who charging money for their songs; they're established, they have an actual value, and they don't need the exposure on SJC DVDs to sell albums. But some of these other guys never would've moved X amount of units if it wasn't for the exposure on the TV shows.

What I've always wondered about is why they never included any credits AT ALL for ANY of the cover songs they used on G.A.H. I didn't even think that was legal...

I've heard that... that M.J. may need to sell the collection to pay his legal fees. Keep in mind also that be originally OUTBID Paul McCartney (!!!) for that collection, and those 2 were friends at the time (note I used the word 'were')...
