Introducing the characters and premise as sort of a "trial balloon" on an already existing series, rather than go the route of a traditional pilot episode (for a varriety of reasons).
Succesful example: "NCIS" was introduced to us on "JAG" the previous season, before the network finalized their Fall schedule
Unsuccesful example: "Assignment: Earth"; the crew of the Starship Enterprise travel back in time to help Gary Seven and Terri Garr save the sixties...or something...
Anywho...I believe Cannel went the backdoor pilot route twice in the 1980s; neither one resulted in a series. I can name them. Can you?

One should be from Riptide. It would have starred Stepfanie Kramer & Belinda Montgomery...I never knew the name of the proposed series. The other escapes me....at the moment.

I'll give you that one, Greenguy; although Stepfanie Kramer's blonde co-star was actually played by a Ms. D.D. Howard. The distaff detective duo was introduced to us in the first season Riptide episode "Four-Eyes" (1984).

Was it Dee Dee? I haven't watched that episode in several years. Didn't Belinda Montgomery appear in a Riptide episode?

I just pulled out my 21 year old video tape and read the actual on-screen credits for myself. If Belinda Montgomery did appear in a Riptide, this one wasn't it.
D.D Howard played Jane, Stepfanie Kramer played Tracy.

I was thinking totally of the wrong episode. Montgomery was in the show with another woman, about some guys blackmailing them to steal. A portion of the show was set at a dog kennel.
DUH....I don't know what I was thinking! Well...yeah I do. When you asked the question, I was thinking of mid-80's Cannell series. Of course I know another one. He tried to spin Richie Brockelman off of The Rockford Files.
I wonder what ever happened to D.D.? I thought for sure she would eventually get her own series. She popped up quite a bit in the 80's.

Not thinking about Richie Brockleman; thinking about something else that was done in the 1980s after he had started his own company.

I'd forgotten all about Richie Brockleman! How funny to have that memory rush back like that.

I'll give you guys a hint about the second backdoor pilot:
It was definitely in the 1980s and on NBC.

So, I guess I'll give up the answer this evening.

The other one was 1988's Sonny Spoon episode "Deuces Wild", featuring Shadoe Stevens as private eye Deuce Daytona, and Ron Glass as his long suffering boss.

I've tried typing "Spoon" several times, but every time I modify it, the final result is "Sthingy". Either something is wrong with my computer or something is wrong with the message board.

SEE!?
That's not what I'm typing! I'm typing the title of Cannell's 1988 detective show starring Mario Van Peebles!!
WTF!?!?!?!?

If it happens to also be on the "banned words" list, then it will automatically be substituted. Try typing the word with a space between each letter.

Well, I know that "Spoon" is only "poon" with an "S" tacked in the front of it...but come on!

For the love of God Almighty!!! This is the New, Improved Message Board?? What other Cannell related things am I prevented from typing? Let's try an experiment: Remember in "Hog Wild" when Ralph stops the lady trucker and snatches the gun from her hand?
Well, apparently, you can indeed type "snatch" here, but not "poon".

Hey, remember in "Now You See It", when Ralph had to pet-sit Pam's pus*y cat?
