Picked up an 80's blast from the past on DVDDISCOUNT.COM for 9 bucks called Hero At Large. It starred John Ritter as a struggling actor making appearances in costume as a movie superhero character named Captain Avenger. One night Ritter is leaving an appearance in costume and stops a convenience store robbery. When the media finds out that "Captain Avenger" foiled the crime, the role goes to Ritter's head and he starts on a life of crimefighting.
While it may not be a great film (it could have used a bit more fleshing out of how Ritter is dealing with his double life, his career, his newfound fame and perhaps something more with the resolution of the mayor subplot), it is worth watching if you like superhero movies. Look fast in the beginning for a very young Kevin Bacon and also for WIlliam Bogert (Carlisle) as a TV Moderator discussing Captain AVenger with Dr. Joyce Brothers.
MOVIE: Hero At Large RATING: PG (Profanity, mild violence) YEAR: 1980 MY RATING **1/2 (out of 4)

Great catch. Kind of sounds like the very bad METEOR MAN and/or BLANKMAN.
