OK, I know this may be one of the bizzarest questions ever, but I've got to hear people's opinions about it. After a year's wait, I have a chance to actually audition for an talent show here in town. It's for a local awards show that's held annually. What I plan to do is a juggling routine (guess that's obvious given the question and some of my posts about the subject ), but the quandry is what music to juggle to. I want to juggle to the theme to "The Greatest American Hero," but I have others as well that are just as good. (And to answer any questions as to whether I actually can juggle to it or not, I can and have a routine to it already) If I do juggle to the routine, I plan on wearing red, black and grey in the form of pair of pants and shirt, and even have red shoes. The jammies would be a bit more difficult to wear because the cape could spin in front of me. I know I will have to make the final decision, but I wanted to see what others thought. If you'd like, please leave comments as well. (Just please don't flame me for the idea, I've had odder. )

Do you own a pair of magic jammies to juggle in? That would be awesome! Unfortunately, no, I don't, not yet anyway. All I have is the shirt I wore to the Walkfest and a pair of black knit pants. Right now, I'm not sure if I could juggle in the jammies, as I haven't practiced wearing a cape. It might spin around in front of me and cause problems. Long sleeves aren't a problem though, as I wore a longsleeved shirt for a routine to the opening of the movie "The Wild Wild West." Currently, I'm thinking of wearing a pair of black pants with red stripes down the sides of the legs, a red shirt (possibly grey trim on the collar), red socks and red canvas shoes. That way, I'd keep the color scheme of the jammies if I don't wear them. (Either way, the costume will be better than the outfit I wore for "Star Trek IV" back in junior high. In that case, I wore a pair of red shorts, a white T-shirt with a sequined parrot on it, red socks, white canvas shoes, and had my hair up in a ponytail with a red scrunchi. I have photos of that night, and I still go "what was I thinking?" It was that mismatched to the song. )

Well, I decided to audition this piece for the show. I called the lady today, and she seems very excited that I'm auditioning, probably because she's tired of the same acts in the show (singing, dancing, and acting). Still don't know yet about the jammies, but I think I'll make a cape just in case so I can practice. Thanks for your help, I'll keep you updated on the routine and costume.

Forgot to mention above, I also plan on auditioning another song as well, the Glenn Miller song "In the Mood (instrumental)." Don't know which one will be used or if both will be used. But, I do know I won't use "Apollo 13" or "Journey of the Sorceror" (a.k.a. the theme to "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy,") which were good, but too slow (and I kept tangling up the towels in the latter).
For the one who dissented, I can assure you one thing, I will keep it real. I take juggling as seriously as I do other hobbies, probably more so since it leaves a lasting impression. The routine won't be campy or stupid, and I won't let it or any of my routines be that way unless they're supposed to be, such as "Orange Blossom Special." (Meaning if the director wants me to make this one that way, I will select a different routine. I like this one the way it is).
I appreciate the votes, especially given the strange question I gave, and as I said above, I'll keep you posted on the status of the routine.

OK, just to let anyone who's still interested, I auditioned the routines today and the director loved both of them. She couldn't even stop commenting in the "Theme to the Greatest American Hero" one. It looks like I might even get to juggle both of them, but it looks like this one's her favorite. Also, she like what I was wearing (my current GAH shortsleeved shirt, black pants and red shoes) so I'll probably stick with that design. But, since the show is in January, I might switch the shortsleeve to a long sleeved shirt with the emblem. The place we're performing gets cold in the evenings, so this will help out. So, right now, I'm walking on air.

I like the idea of juggling, but I put that I don't know because I think other songs from the series would be great to see juggled to as well...maybe even over the theme. I think it would be neat to see SCRAMBLE performed in a juggling routine.

I think it would be neat to see SCRAMBLE performed in a juggling routine. I see your point, HD. Scramble would be good (and I could wear my sunglasses like I did for "Mission: Impossible,") but it is too short, unfortuantely. There are a few others I'd like to try from the show as well, but like the aforementioned, they're too short. The one I used was the longer version of the "GAH theme" on the CDs. Personally, I'd also liked to have juggled to the instrumental version (I like the electric guitar in it better), but I can't record it to tape. The theme is a little slow, but it works because of its beat. (Plus, it's the only time I get to juggle on my stomach, and has a few other neat tricks.)

What about DREAMS? It was used at the end of the show too. Plus, the song they put in for OPERATION: SPOILSPORT might work as well as it tended to be a trifle longer. You could always do songs from the original pilot because they were real hits for people like the BEACH BOYS and you could find them full-length.

"Dreams" is too slow (I tried it), as it the replacement for O:SS. I have considered Beach Boys songs in the past (I have a couple to Monkees songs), but right now, I'm going to stick with the one I auditioned, "Believe it or Not" because the group I auditioned for liked it.

That's cool. I was just trying to think ahead. Is ROCKETMAN from the pilot to slow as well?

That's cool. I was just trying to think ahead. Is ROCKETMAN from the pilot to slow as well? Thanks. I don't know, might work. I rate slower songs against "Apollo 13," the first slow one I did (the first was to music from "Star Trek IV".) It was too slow and didn't have a specific beat. This one works because of the speed and beat, in that it's faster and a good beat. "Journey of the Sorceror" is another good one, though it's a little slower. Same with "Jurassic Park," but in it's case, the routine is currently too long (7-1/2 minutes) "Rocketman" might work, but I haven't practiced it.

So the routine is what is keeping you from using shorter songs? How long do juggling routines have to be at a minimum?

So the routine is what is keeping you from using shorter songs? How long do juggling routines have to be at a minimum? No standard length for the routine, but I try to keep the song around 3 minutes. That way, people can see most of the tricks I can do, but not so long I get sore or trip over things. The shortest one I have right now is the "Doctor Who" Peter Howell arraignment at 2:42, then "Wild, Wild West" at 2:57 and "In the Mood" at 2:50. Star Wars and this one are at 3:15 and 3:07 (part I stop) respectively. The longest two are "Man from Snowy River" at 4:55, and the aforementioned "Jurassic Park." For this upcoming show, it had to be no longer than 3 minutes, but I was given a few seconds grace. Other shows have been 5 minutes max, though I think our college one people could get away with 7 max. Now, there is one routine (completely off the cuff too) that has been even longer, but it was one I juggled at the country opry. It was "Orange Blossom Special/Cabbage," and lasted about 10 to 15 minutes. The person who played the fiddle was showing off as much as I was. He could play the fiddle in different ways and styles, even threading in snippets of songs such as "Flintstones," "I've Been Working on the Railroad," and "Mockingbird" in there. It was one of the few times I ever saw the band get a standing ovation. Real cool, but very exhausting.
