I truly wonder what the music for the show would have been like (based on Headquarters and Head) if Don Kirschner would have let them write and play more songs for the show I think it'd have been even better than it was (and it was good then.) Two big differences songwise would have been more songs with Mike and Peter leading. Most of them (at least episodes I've seen), are predominately Micky and Davy. While I like the others' singing, Mike and Peter also have very good voices. Peter seems to me the one who got left out the most singing the lead, with "Auntie Grizelda" being the only one from the series I've heard (If he sang more leads, I apologize. Haven't heard all the songs yet). Mike sang lead to "What Am I Doin' Hangin' 'Round" and "She," and others as well, which was more than Peter. Also, I think it hurt the band initially when the powers that be had different backup singers in the first two records. That changed with Headquarters, and it made a difference. Conversely, I wonder what would have happened if they didn't cancel the series. Maybe the group would have been allowed to write more songs. Who knows what would have happened. You listen to Justus, and you realize the potential missed when they weren't allowed to write many songs for the show. That CD is very good, makes you wish they'd get together for another, though I don't think it's likely all four would.

Peter's voice is ok, but he has a very limited range.... I had the feeling that if the show continued for another season or 2 there would be less story and more special musical guests like Charlie Smalls and Frank Zappa...

I wouldn't have minded some special guests in the show, but I think a lot of the charm of "The Monkees" was that the four got into trouble mostly beside themselves and the zany storylines. It would be more of a variety show if they had too much music, so the story was important. Three songs would have worked tops, but you'd risk too many unhappy guest musicians that way if they only got one, so there might have been some uneasiness between bands. (I'm not saying it's a bad idea though, because you see all these new bands on the night shows that might not had a chance had they not appeared on them. So who knows?)
