Seeing the "Partners" thread below made me remember one of the great enduring questions that I had about the series. "Why did Bill Maxwell never get a new partner?" Since the FBI didn't know about Ralph, they should have given him a new partner, as least for some assignments. We know of two former partners (the Pilot and Good Samaritan) but even in Divorse, Venusian Style, when Bill is on a STAKEOUT (for goodness sake) he is (as far as the FBI is concerned) ALONE!!!! How could the Feds have Bill on a stakeout and not give him a partner?? Did Carlilse plan this in hopes Bill would get killed some day? Truly, this is one of the mysteries of GAH.

When you figure that out, let me know why there are no seatbelts on the Starship Enterprise!

When you figure that out, let me know why there are no seatbelts on the Starship Enterprise! Actually, that one is easy. In real space, there is no gravity and hence the crew members wouldn't be tossed as easily back and forth, of course then they also wouldn't be WALKING around the Enterprise at all!

Not to mention that Ralph had been caught helping Bill on numerous occasions with cases and yet his boss and the FBI seem to just let it go.
Like no one has done a background chekc on Ralph or wonder why he hangs out with Bill.

Actually, in one episode (I think the IRS one) they state "known associates : Ralph Hinkley." Of course, since Ralph doesn't have any criminal record there is nothing unusual in it from that angle. What is odd is that Carlilse never makes the connection even though he met Ralph on several occasions (including the one that put him in the looney bin in season 1).

Not only that, but in the episode "Live at Eleven" in the 3rd season, he sees Bill get a call over the walkie-talkie a couple of times and goes with him. Granted, he gave it back with the radioactive Ralph giving suggestions, but you think he would have remembered it later and been all over Bill's garbanzo beans.

Yea, I thought about mentioning Live at Eleven but figured that Ralph's mind trick did the trick. Still, aside from Carlilse hatred of Bill, I didn't see the big deal. Feds often have tipsters who are not officially on the payrole. A lot of times they can't do without them. I think Carlilse knew that Bill had a tipster but wanted to find out who he was.

True...it is a shame Bill did not think to say that and to say that his source was confidential. Sometimes Bill was just not on the ball in front of his boss.

This would have probably made an excellent episode: The Bureau wants to give Bill new partner and they have to find a way to get out of it because of Ralph and the suit.

I concur...a new partner angle would have been fun. Maybe he only ever had Harlan as a partner to train him. Maybe Mackie from the pilot was just working with him on a case or something and he said partner in that sense. Or maybe people either retire or die around Bill so they thought they should let him go about his business on his own.

Plus, in one episode (and I don't remember which), Bill says something about how having partners doesn't work out in the field. Maybe that is why he was a solo special agent...after all, you never saw the others have partners either.

Well, actually all the guys who trailed Bill in Fire Man worked in twos. Remember, Bill even stole one of their burgers!

Yes, but they were not FBI. CIA, Treasury, IRS, everyone was looking for Tony, so I still concede that the FBI guys might go solo.

In Divorce Venusian Style, didn't Bill mention being on stake out with someone named Huggins? and how they would be scarfing down the burgers; then mentioning some type of bugle call Huggins made with his lips?

He also mentions Teddy in the episode A CHICKEN IN EVERY PLOT, but I took both to mean that they were paired together out of necessity...kind of like a small group assignment in a classroom or in a business environment. Just because you work with them once does not make you partners.
