in your opinion best shows how close Ralph and Bill are as friends?
You know, even if Bill doesn't show it much, I think values Ralph very highly as a dear friend. I'm even willing to bet he's added Pam in his "circle" as well. I guess maybe you could say that they are the GAH "family". Yes sometimes they bicker, but it's mostly superficial.
I started thinking about that the other day after I watched the interview with Robert Culp on the Season 1 disc.
So, which episodes, in your opinions clearly define their friendship?

Ha, that was me before I got approved. It usually takes a few days to get approved on some of these boards, and I got impatient..
I like the ones that focus more indepth on the Ralph and Bill relationship (and I do mean FRIENDship only, so please, nobody accuse me of being slashy here).

I'm restricted on time as I quickly type this, so it will be short. Offhand, I'd say Ralph taking a bullet for Bill in Divorce Venusian Style shows how close the friendship had developed.
also, welcome to the forum!

Thanks. I'm pretty new to GAH. So if I ask a seemingly "silly" question, it's pretty much because I'm a total newbie. The show aired before I was even borne. But I grew up on old TV shows so GAH easily became a favorite of mine.

Welcome to the forum. (The show aired before I was born too). ;D I agree that DIVORCE shows it, but I think VANITY shows it quite well too.

Oddly, it seems that Bill the Circuit Rider Tough Guy seems to call Ralph his "best friend" all the time, while Ralph actually states Bill is a friend only a few times, if that. One of the clearest times is in Desperado, when he states Bill is "a good friend" and does it with sincerity and honesty and gratefulness. It's really touching. However, the episodes show their friendship all over the place: yes, Ralph blocking the bullet for Bill and then Bill overcoming his panic to go with Ralph on board the ship; Bill and Ralph going fishing at the end of the Carlini episode; Bill and Ralph pretty much throughout the whole episode of "There's No Accounting", which I think is one of the BEST friendship episodes in the series; hanging out watching the horses; hanging out barbecuing at Ralph's; hanging out after "200 mph" at the bar; etc. Although Ralph was less open verbally than Bill was with saying they were friends, I think it's obvious as the episodes progressed that they became friends, and very close ones, best friends.
I'm not so sure Ralph had that many good friends--certainly none of them felt compelled to change their plans to attend his last minute wedding. Meanwhile, Bill does have Harlan, his surrogate dad, whom he loves and has a very close relationship with, and had Winslow--until he went to jail--and still has "Tommy" the cop as friends, as well as CIA friends, but we don't see him spend time with them.
As for Bill and Pam, notice that while Pam has an annoying habit of putting Bill down a lot, as soon as danger rears, she's standing behind him for protection and he's right there to offer it (the gold mine episode when the hillbillies confront them at the bus is a perfect example).
Man, it was such a Great Show.

Yeah when I read this, the first thing that came to mind was "Divorce" also. "They'll send you down another partner...as good as me..." "I've got the best partner in the world. I don't want another partner."

"Divorce" is possibly the all-time best example of showing their close friendship. However, one scene be-it very small. Just a couple lines show Bill's emotions about their friendship which I think should be included in this..
Pam - "I understand the importance of what you and Ralph have been doing, and I know there are times when sacrifices have to be made. There have been times when I've been the sacrifice, but I'm not willing to sacrifice Ralph. Not for anything."
Bill - "Okay.. Ralph's important to me too. Don't forget it."
Pam - "Then let's do this my way."
What episode? A Train of Thought. Definitely shows the feelings of "losing" a friend one way or another.

Thanks everyone. I find it interesting that so far, (I've watched through to the "Plague") that it's usually Ralph panicking over Bill when stuff happens to him. (he gets kidnapped a lot for a fed. ) The only time Bill has had worries over Ralph has been in the "Beast in Black" (did I say it right?), after he got thrown of the 4th dimension.. Really enjoying the show. Man, they don't make shows that good anymore.. And ignore me if I sound like I'm rambling. I just spent most of the day stuck in a hot dog show building with a busted AC unit. That, coupled with the fact that it was 95 degrees here, and we got beat, doesn't make a very pleasant day. I started thinking about that the other day after I watched the interview with Robert Culp on the Season 1 disc.BTW, when RC is talking about how close Bill & Ralph are, it shows a clip from an episode where, from what I can tell, Ralph gets hurt. Is that from DIVORCE?

If it's where Ralph is leaning against a car then leans into Bill afterward, yep, it's from "Divorce." Don't want to spoil it though if you haven't seen it in a while - it's one of the best ones from Season Three. Also, I can't say much more than what's been said here about Ralph and Bill's friendship, but it was neat to see how two opposites could actually work well together.

I've gone through season 1 and almost half of season 2 so far. And can't really remember a time yet where Bill has called Ralph his friend. Partner yes, but not friend yet.. (correct me if I'm wrong. It's late here)

Well, off the top of my head Bill mentions "best friend" around 3-4 times in "Train of Thought alone". He mentions best friend in the tag of "Who's Woo".

Someone mentioned this line..
Ralph: What would you ever do without me? Bill: I don't know.
What episode is that from? (idly wondering here..)

Hmmm.. maybe... I might have missed it the first time around.
It's driving me crazy. I'm finding every other quote that I've heard other gah fans talk about except that one. :-)
Anyone else know?
