I did a search for a thread dedicated to this ep, and was surprised that there isn't one! Although one hit I got was "Worst Episodes...." so I can imagine what some of you might think of it. I personally really liked it, and now consider it in the 4 out of 5 category for episodes. Maybe it was having watched it immediately after watching a few "I Spy" episodes, but one reason I really liked it was the intrigue (although I was wondering, as it was going along, when I was going to see my man Bill for the first time in it). I loved how all these factions are after the guy, and keep thinking Ralph is Kaballa. I think Katt did a better-than-usual acting job (maybe cuz Mom was there?), esp. toward the end when he essentially tells Philip, "You're NOT marrying my mother!" If that added ire and feeling hadn't been thrown in as it was (similar to when Ralph gets genuinely angry at the dude in "Chicken in Every Plot" when the guy was going to lop off Pam's head), I would've been sorely disappointed. I mean, this is his MOTHER we're talking about here! I think the whole episode moved smoothly and quickly, with good action throughout, and of course Robert Culp rocked I esp. loved the final scene when Bill's asking Ralph for permission to court his mother. I knew about the scene from hearing it on a soundbite on the GAH Shrine website, and knew it was from that ep with Ralph's (and William's) Mother. (I tried inserting the image of Ralph fixing Bill's tie in here, but for some reason it wasn't appearing.) Sure, it's no O:SS or Divorce...., but I loved it any way, and Im' going to go re-watch it soon and actually take down some things. Oh, and Lauren, if you're reading this: Sceencaps of Ralph coming soon, cuz DAYUM, does he look fine in this one, whew!! (Altho that shot of "Ralph's" tummy when it's obviously NOT his tummy is pretty dumb, ain't it?)

I didn't much care for the episode as a whole - I thought it was more or less "OK", EXCEPT for that AWESOME scene at the end between Ralph and Bill that you just referred to. I could watch those kinds of scenes like that (between the two of them) for hours on end (see: ending of "Don't Mess Around With Jim", etc.). I wish they had written/filmed more of those types of scenes.

Overall, I enjoyed this episode. There were quite a few funny scenes and they seemed to all match. My favorite scene is the ending with Ralph basically being the son who makes sure his mom is going to go out with a nice gentleman. I also like it when one of the reasons Ralph doesn't want his mom to marry Phillip is "Well, who wants to go around with a name like Paula Kaballa?" I do have to say though, that the stand-in used during the second polygraph test was a funny blooper. Not only was it funny for the obvious reason, but also because the shirt is way off, as the amazing morphing shirts appear. It's like in "Desparado" when the horse nuzzles Ralph to wake him up. The stand-in's shirt is basically the same colors, but they are the opposite pattern of the shirt Katt wears.

I thought the episode was pretty good overall. One funny scene is when Ralph is trying to determine if the old man across from him and Pam in the bar is Philip and then gets flustered when it is not. Ralph says that the guy probably thinks that he is trying to pick him up. Funny. The episode as a whole is not well thought out, but there are a lot of little scenes like that that make the episode work very well.

I thought that was pretty unusual for an early 80's show, yeah, about a guy thinking that, lol! I laughed.

I think about this episode all the time because something like this totally happened to me once: I work as a Spanish interpreter, often in local municipal courts. When I'm there I'm there for anyone and everyone who needs me, not just specific cases. When it looks like I'm finished, someone in charge (the judge or his clerk) has me ask, in Spanish, if anyone else needs my services before I leave. I used to say, in Spanish, "Somebody needs the Spanish Interpreter?" Never had a problem. One time, a sweet little old lady from the back of the court slowly made her way up to me at the front and said something that perplexed me. "I'm not an interpreter, but I speak Spanish. Can I help?" I had no idea what she meant. "What?" I asked, utterly confused. She explained, "You just said, 'Somebody needs the Spanish interpreter." It took me a few seconds to realize what she was talking about, "Yeah," I responded, finally figuring it out, "but I said it like a question. I was asking if anyone needed the Spanish interpreter. Ever since then, I've rephrased the question as: " Who needs the Spanish interpreter?" And That's why I think about this episode all the time (or at least most of the time when I'm in court).

The two very best shots of Pam are the ones in DEVIL IN THE DEEP BLUE SEA where she is wearing the jacket over the bikini top...which Lauren has a decent picture of...and in the CARLINI episode when she is in her Halloween costume. Classic mouth-drooling Pam.

Rewatched again today and I have to say that this episode is better than I originally gave it credit for being...so this is probably my favorite Hasburgh episode too. Although it seems that his solo scripts are too short and rely on a lot of excess footage...such as the fighter pilots in NOW YOU SEE IT...and the endless scenery in WHO'S WOO. I like how you see the whiny side of Katt...first about the tennis match...then about his mother sending him a marriage invitation by postcard...then the jealousy again. He seemed to get more jealous about his mother than Pam. That is odd since it seems that he doesn't care for her too much since he SHOOTS his head when Pam says it is his mother. I do like Barbara Hale. I don't know what else she has been in or if I would know it if I saw it, but she was great in this episode...just like a lady in love...must have been easy for the jealousy...probably a better Katt performance too...good thinking billswoman. This is the episode where you find out FOR SURE how Ralph feels about the friendship with Bill. In TRAIN OF THOUGHT, we know that Bill sees himself that way, but you never hear Ralph say it. Here, you hear Paula say it to Ralph in shock that "you haven't told your best friend?" Obviously Ralph told her about his best friend, Bill. I like the fast change into the tuxedo at Philip's hotel room...although Bill must be breaking the sound barrier since he got there moments later. Other odd moments of shooting that got me were during the scene at the chapel. How did the good guys NOT see Ralph flying to get the Arabs and the others? How did Bill get caught by the bad guys? He was too far away a second ago...and now...he is caught. Also, why didn't Paula wonder about Bill's role in the arrests? Bill told Ralph to go get them...you think as a mother she would worry and wonder why a Fed was sending the school teacher to get guys with guns. GREAT CLOSING SCENE WITH RALPH AND BILL! I agree with Maxwell-FBI that this is what makes the show click...character moments with those two or even Pam involved. Much better than I originally gave it credit for too.

One other thing that always struck me as odd. Why didn't the bad guys notice the sedans at the chapel? You think that they might have noticed the goverment-issued cars. I doubt the Interior man thought too much about that since he was just getting something from a courier.

I agree with several of your comments, HD, (yes, the "whiny" bit with tennis too) so I'm just going to pick up these two points. Ralph shooting himself in the head can also mean he forgot to call his mom. To me anyway, Ralph seems to be the type who'd try to call his mom once a week or at least often. The way he reacts around his mom with her 'fiance' there (being the Mother hen as it were) shows that he truly does care about his mom, and in this case, he gets bad vibes that the man's bad (and was right). And as far as Barbara Hale and what she's been in... (again, need a fainting smiley put as an option here sometime) She was Della Street in the "Perry Mason" TV series and the subsequent movies. She's to my knowledge the only surviving member of the original cast now. She had a wonderful chemistry with Richard Burr in the series and it was the more enjoyable for it (the series itself is great as well, and yes... I've watched it, though in syndication). You ought to see if there are any DVD or videos of the original series or movies and watch an episode.

I think this was a great character episode with Ralph getting really possessive of his mother. And for one of the first times they explore the almost father/son aspects of Bill and Ralph's friendship. Just my own opinion, and I don't know if it was ever mentioned in the series, but I sometimes got the impression Ralph didn't grow up with a father, at least not for the whole childhood. That would certainly explain the possessiveness, not to mention his occasional cynical view of life. Oh and since this episode guest stars the very talented Barbara Hale, I wanted to include these. There's this site called The Barbara Hale Annex with a surprisingly extensive amount of newspaper clippings from the '50s. Thought these particular ones would be appropriate today : www.barbarahaleannex.com/documents/1954-05_Movie_World-pg52.jpg(This one foreshadows the future a bit, hehe ) www.barbarahaleannex.com/documents/1953-08_TV_Show-pg38-1.jpg
