I found some classic episodes of Columbo online at some site in Dutch or some Scandanavian language. Anyway, one episode (divided into two parts), called "Death Lends A Hand", guest-stars Robert Culp in a different kind of role for him. He plays a villain in this one. I don't think I've ever see him play anything other than good guys, so it's a refreshing change. And he turns in a great performance, in my opinion.
Here are the links to part 1 and 2 of the Columbo episode "Death Lends A Hand" (1971). Be forewarned that it takes forever to download.

I think throughout his career Culp played several bad guys or ambiguous characters in that area - a couple of other bad guy or questionable characters include his role in the video game "Voyeur" and Jesse Travis' father in "Diagnosis Murder" in the episode he is in there.
He's one of the few actors I've seen play good and bad guys and do a very good job at both - and one of the few who understands how to do both in the same story at times.

That shows how great an actor he was.
That was the first time I ever saw Culp play a bad guy----it was fun to watch!

He does strike me as a someone who really tried to get inside whatever character he was doing. I think save maybe one or two very rare instances he did do that. There is one character he played in a movie that I felt was a bit too close to Bill Maxwell, and he was the bad guy in that. The movie wasn't that good though overall, so I don't really fault him there.

By the way, I forgot to mention----in case any of you are interested in seeing that Columbo episode----that, although the episode happens to be at some Scandanavian site, the episode is indeed in English----and without any Swedish subtitles or whatever. In other words, it's fully watchable for us.

Culp was one of my favorite Columbo 'bad guys'.
Great episodes.

Oh, did Culp appear in more than one episode of Columbo?

He did three. Four, if you count "Columbo Goes to College" from 1990something...
I've only seen two so far. "Death Lends a Hand" and "The Most Crucial Game."

I just found an old VHS at my library of the 1985 film Turk 182, where a young man fights injustice by taking on the mayor of his town (played by Robert Culp). It's only a couple years after GAH so Culp's performance kind of feels like Bill Maxwell if he decided to become a corrupt government official later in life, lol. Perhaps he and Ralph had a falling out! Hehe

I was watching a romantic comedy the other day...either FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS or NO STRINGS ATTACHED...and the movie where Culp is part of the foursome or whatever was on the TV in the background. ;D

By the way, I have now watched another Columbo episode guest-starring Culp. He plays another villain-----a ruthless one, this time. Wears a mustache. His acting in this episode is a little closer to Bill Maxwell than the previous Columbo episode I saw him in.

The movie that had Culp in wife swapping (a '70s thing apparently - you put keys in a bowl and drew your date), and other interesting sexual experiences was called "Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice." (warning, the names might be in the wrong order, but they are the names). I've never seen it myself, but a few of the die-hard Culp fans would be able to tell you more about the particular movie.

Robert Culp also starred in the Outer Limits episode which some consider to be the very best of the series: "Demon With a Glass Hand".
