I read that today and immediately thought of Lauren. She was a huge Monkees fan.

Oh, 1986, where have you gone?...The revival of the Monkees and the run of the series on MTV got me hooked, and of course, Davy was my favorite. In 1988 my cousin's neighbor made me a mixtape and I played that thing for 15 years until it broke, then I started buying CDs. Although I like each Monkee for their individual personalities...Davy has always been my favorite. It's so hard to believe he's gone...I hate that pieces of my childhood keep slipping away. My grandmother and several of my aunts and uncles have already passed away, as well as some of my favorite TV personalities (such as Robert Culp and Bill Bixby). I'm just...so sad...he was the youngest in the group (not that I want ANY of them to go away). Guess I should know by now that just because somebody is younger doesn't mean s/he won't be the first to go.

I thought about Lauren myself when I heard the news; maybe she will decide to make an appearance for this solemn occasion. The 80s revival got me hooked as well. The show was hilarious, and the music quickly grew on me. I have all the original albums, either on cassette or CD. "Headquarters" is one of my favorites, which I actually managed to get autographed by Micky D himself when he appeared at AdventureCon in Knoxville, TN a couple of years ago. I also like "Pisces, Aquarius" and "Instant Replay", and the Missing Links CDs have some great stuff on them. Mike was actually my favorite of the bunch; he was the "straight man" to the antics of the rest; I always figured that would have been my own style. Too bad he sat out most of the tour; he wasn't at the Fun Fest performance I saw, but they at least performed "Listen to the Band" which is one of my favorite Mike songs. The reunion episode they made was fun to watch; it was written as if the original show never ended. They all still lived in the same house, drove the same car, and still never made it quite beyond the occasional birthday party gig. Favorite episodes, off the top of my head: the one where Davy's grandfather came to visit and the guys helped him pretend to be rich and successful, as Davy had led him to believe.... And the one where three of the four were suckered into signing lifetime contracts for dance lessons.
