I have always loved this episode.
We get to see a good portion of the students and how Ralph wants to connect with them. Plus, how he looks out for them with the shares of the mine. Pam and Bill are along with them on a field trip and it is a good bonding experience. We also get to know some of their hopes and dreams too.
We learn about Harlan and how Bill learned from him.
We get the great lesson on greed from everyone and how selfless they were at the end. Almost dying for their greed taught them just how thankful they should be it seemed.
The one thing I didn't care for was the hillbillies. Yes, I know they needed some foil to help learn the final lesson on greed, but I felt the episode was good without it. It would have been nice to fill those extra minutes with something else naturally happening like the kids in a different vein or something. I know why the hillbillies were included, but I think the episode could have survived without it.
What do you all think?

The Lost Diablo is actually one of my favorite episodes. The show doesn't get much better than this one. It's one of those eps that stay with you. The only problem I have with it is the fact that for some unknown reason, they decided to shoot this one on videotape instead of film. It's the only time they ever did that for the entire series as far as I know, and the picture quality is noticeably inferior, especially for the flying sequences.
