I don't know if this has been discussed before, but I've got a chicken and the egg question regarding the GAH universe:
Do you think the aliens made the suit look like a superhero costume because of Earth's comic books (perhaps mistakenly thinking we think heroes should really dress like that in real life), or do you think Superman's costume was inspired by previous suits the aliens had handed out?
In either case I bet Ralph wished his suit had looked more like something the green guys wear!

in my fan fiction that i will be using for the GAH comic books, Ralph goes back in time and fights side by side in world war 2 with Bills father. Who then relates his stories to a friend who is wounded and sent home. At home in a VA hospital, this friend tells the stories of this caped hero to young comic creators simon and shuster....who then create SUPERMAN!

Hey, I love the idea of this kind of fanfic and don't want to sound like a nit-picker at all, but:
Siegel and Shuster were working on the Superman concept as early as 1933 and Supes first appeared in Action Comics #1 in June, 1938. By WWII Supes was a phenom, with a radio show and cartoons in the theater and everything.
Now, I do remember reading or hearing that Culp had a whole backstory about Bill lying about his age to serve at the very tail end of WW2 (anyone else remember this?). Not canon, but...I'd read a time travel story about Ralph saving a young Bill's life (and Bill not even realizing it). Or even setting the time travel during Korea (maybe even getting to see Tracy Winslow in action. That character always intrigued me).
Anyway, I really don't mean to let any air out of your tires, but if you do comics, you probably already know how we fanboys are about continuity. However it turns out, let us know when the story's done! --BAB

I always thought that since the aliens are so fond of television broadcasts that they'd picked up the original Superman episodes and used that as the template for creating the suit(s). Just my theory.

I like the idea of the green guys basing the suit on superman shows...
Making the suit look like a superhero costume might have been a subconscious confidence booster; that is, telling someone a set of clothes would give them super powers might be hard to swallow, but if they are dressed in clothes that they associate with super powers, they might believe it more. And from Ralph's experiences, using the suit is all about mental control.
The best idea I've seen on this board though is where Ralph would eventually have been able to make the suit assume different looks- like Spiderman's living costume from the 1980s.
And now I'm imaging a red-armored hero from the middle ages; the green guys having given him a super-powered suit. Hey! A medieval ironman type!
