I'm starting to remember some things about this show upon watching the DVD and some things still forgotten... Like it's been so long since I've seen the Pilot episode, that I barely remembered much of it, so it was like a new wonderful experience, even though I've been there. hee hee... So many questions swirl in my head now... -Do they ever find the instruction book? -Does Ralph ever learn to fly without crashing? -I remember that Hinkley was changed to Hanley, but never remember it being changed back. -Was there ever mechandise for this show? -And if there was, then why didn't I have any.... -Like where's my figurines and collectibles?, I wanted a pair of GAH jammies when I was a kid...*sniff*

The aliens return to give Ralph another instruction book in the 3rd season premier, "Divorce, Venusian Style". I'll avoid any further spoilers, so that you may enjoy it for yourself when the 3rd season DVD set is released this August.
With time and practice, Ralph did crash less. See the end of "Fire Man" and "Hog Wild" for early examples. He never did perfect the art, though.
The name was changed back to Hinkley as of the second season premier, "The 200 Mile-an-Hour Fastball"; the second Season DVD set will be available in April.
The only official merchandise I ever saw/purchased was a iron-on transfer at the T-Shirt place (wish I still had it).

Yeah, it's a shame that the show didn't last longer, because you could see it was 'growing up' as things went along. There would be less 'goofy' screaming and crashing and Ralph seemed to 'kick it up a notch' on the quality of his flying when the situation was critical - witness his 'landing' with the little girl in his arms in There's Just No Accounting... and his not too bad landings in The Good Samaritan (when saving the little boy in the forest) and in The Newlywed Game (right after taking the pictures with the helmet camera on).

^Yeah, the screaming was clearly a big turnoff for a lot of people. They didn't get why he did that.
Even me, a diehard fan found the constant screaming of the 1st and 2nd season to occasionally be a bit too much. Especially when he would say something like "Ahhhhhahhh, Ahhh!, Oh No, ahhhh, oh no", or "Oh Bill,.....Bill!" I wish they had scaled that back a bit, it got to be too much sometimes.
If they just had to have him scream every single time when he flew, then just a straight scream or yell sans the "Oh Bill, Oh Bill!" and the "Oh No! Ahhh! Oh no!", and the deplorable garbled "whooowhooo!!" would have been preferable. If I was Katt I would have just coldly stared right back at Cannell when I looked at a script loaded up with those other kind of goofy screams. That "Oh Bill!,...Bill!" stuff was terrible. It sounded so gay too. I guess we can't blame people for thinking the show wasn't very cool when Ralph would yell stuff like that out.

Yeah, I agree completely. And a lot of times (in the earlier episodes) it sort of ruined a couple great original tunes. Nothin's Gonna Bring Me Down (one of my favs) is basically a background song for a lot of screaming, yelling and crashing. A shame.

I wish they had scaled that back a bit, it got to be too much sometimes. -scenario- I didn't mind the straight out screams as heard in the 1st season. But as you, I HATED the "oh Bill..Oh...Bill..oh". Other screams I hated can be heard in Lilac's Mr. Maxwell. Twice we get to hear some sort of bllaaahhhhhhh sound. Once crashing into a house through the window, and then again before falling into the ocean. In the 3rd season, the yell heard while crashing into the street lamp pole was boarder line silly. But the real goofy one heard in the 3rd season is the gurgle baby sounding bbllaaahhh heard as Ralph nose dives into the pool in The Resurrection Of Carlini. Nothin's Gonna Bring Me Down (one of my favs) is basically a background song for a lot of screaming, yelling and crashing. A shame. Although I personally didn't mind the screaming, yelling, and crashing all heard while Nothin's Gonna Bring Me Down plays. I can see perfectly, how one could find it annoying while trying to enjoy the song.

The whole landing thing really sticks out to me too. Especially the episode where they chase down the runaway jet fighter in the desert. Ralph crashes about six times... and every time he gets up and jumps to take off again he's jumping off the very same "hide the springboard" sand dune. Its really obvious. I guess that's what happens when you're on a limited budget and timeline!

I can see perfectly, how one could find it annoying while trying to enjoy the song. Since people like you and me are die hard, loyal fanatics of this show, we can always see past some of the goofy screams and see the characters and stories of the series we love. But I know whenever I've tried to introduce the show to someone, as soon as Katt took to the air and started screaming...they were totally turned off by what they were seeing. I would have preferred a straight out scream or yell as well whenever Ralph flew. I was always grateful that in the 3rd season Ralph learned how to have better control of the suit and fly much better, even without the instruction book, and subsequently quit yelling all the time. Even though he grew in confidence and flew better, the heart and soul of the character was still retained. The "Ahhhahhh! Ahhhhahhh!" and the "Oh No! Oh No!", as well as the baby gurgle "whoooohooo!" were just downright awful in my opinion. That "Oh Bill, Oh Bill!" stuff was basically unforgivable. What in the world was Bill going to do for Ralph when Ralph is 100 ft up in the air? Calling out for Bill like that sounded terrible, and uncomfortably homoerotic. The screaming and crashing was a part of the character, but they did take it too far on occassions. -scenario-

*giggles* Oh dear. can't stop laughing here. I read all the posts about the screaming and as goofy as it sounds, it does sound pretty funny. Now that I think about it, I wasn't ever bothered by it. Probably back then I just thought it was hilarious. I love the show so much, I can overlook it. Hopefully, William Katt was having fun with it. The other stuff I completely forgot about: -That Ralph was married before -He was married to a model - And he had a son I remembered that he was a teacher and remember the students. But I s'pose the above stuff was so unimportant to me at the time, it didn't seem worth remembering. Though I find it quite interesting now...

for me the screaming would have been less annoying if it wasnt the SAME screaming over an over again. but like that girl with the crazy cat ( ) i didnt think much of it at the time.

Kinda makes me wonder if they just made a tape of him screaming and just played it over and over while he was flying, seems that if he talks or screams while he moves, it's a bit out of sync. hee hee...my poor crazy cat, now he's just old and senile

"Lousy Wright Brothers" is a quote from Ralph from the Here's Looking At You Kid episode. Love the look on this face when he says it too...

Wait, wasn't there a line in the script at the end of The Newlywed Game where PAM was supposed to start calling out "Oh Bill...Oh Bill"? If you know what I mean.
