Hello, all,
Yes, they are remastering the I Spy DVDs (again) but more importantly putting them in SEASON order, not Area of the World ordered, so the DVDs will have episodes as originally presented. That's much more logical to folks. Price is reasonable--$60 for three seasons. Fans are concerned to know if there will still be commentary like on the DVDs now out.

In case people want to see what I SPY was like if you have never seen it...and before you go rushing out to buy DVDs of it, there is a site that allows you to watch episodes of some shows for free called www.hulu.com Here is the link for the first season of I SPY: www.hulu.com/i-spyAnd Mona, I have no idea if they are in the right order or not.

Sweet. I actually was just about to post that I had never seen the show (but have of course heard good things).
Thanks for the link!

No problem. I am hoping to find some time to watch a few before I decide to buy the DVD set or not.

Hulu is pretty cool. While they were still in testing, an article appeared in one of the trade magazines we get here at work. One of the head honchos of Hulu noted that The A-Team, and Airwolf episodes were getting watched more than newer shows like Heroes, etc.

That's because the A-TEAM is awesome. I should stroll by and see if it they are the DVD release versions or the originals....I never thought of that.

Of course, GG, the A-TEAM has everything released while HEROES and such only have a few episodes on there. I am watching I SPY and I am awed that Robert Culp wrote the pilot episode as he was not a creator of the series that I know of...and they usually seem to write the pilot. I am correct in the fact that SO LONG PATRICK HENRY is the pilot, right, Mona? Love Ivan Dixon in this one! EDITED TO ADD: If they were such equals, I wonder why Culp was VERY predominant in the opening credits as opposed to Cosby and him sharing equally? Must be a sign of the times sadly.

Hello, HD,
Culp solo in the opening credits is not a "sign of the times"; "I Spy" was way ahead of the "times" in all racial areas. Culp was only in the credits because he was the well known famous actor, Sheldon Leonard was making "I Spy" SPECIFICALLY for him, and Cosby was a completely unknown 27 year old comic who had never acted at all. In fact, Culp worked to push through Cosby as his partner, as they hit it off immediately, had the same vision for the show, and Cosby's initial reading wasn't that good.
The pilot episode originally written wasn't good and so Culp locked himself up in his attic study for four months writing "So Long Patrick Henry", a great episode, which got approved as the pilot. Culp of course wrote 7 of the I Spy episodes, including ones which are highly favored by fans, such as the magnificent "Home To Judgment", as well as "Court of the Lion", which is not one of my personal favorites but some folks love. Culp's episodes, like in TGAH, are darker, heavier, and have little or no humor in them (although GAH's "Lilacs" does have very good humor in the show). So, it's good he didn't write too many of the episodes as I Spy was best when the plot was good, the banter was good, there was some fun misadventures, and then things got serious and solved.
Glad you're enjoying checking out the show!

I can't think of the one I heard that Culp wrote that was not adored by fans, but it must be the VANITY of I SPY. Did the opening credits change over the seasons to reflect Cosby more since he would be more well-known after a season?

Actually, no, the credits got more simple, not complex. At the first, the opening played the scenes from the show (under Kelly's eyes) that was going to be shown that night. But it got just too difficult with the kind of filming that they did to organize that regularly, so the show chose some scenes and just stayed with those for the rest of the episodes shown. You can notice that Cosby's name grew larger as they did use larger font in the openings for him by the second or so season.

Did anyone go get the DVDs yesterday? Is it worth it? (And I mean from a strictly entertainment opinion, not a "Of course since Culp is in it" way?)

Mona I don't know if all of the commentaries made it over, but I was browsing a Best Buy today and each season had a couple of episode commentaries, but I am not sure by who. I was bummed to see no other special features though. They are in series order from what I could tell. Cheap too. All three seasons might have cost me forty bucks.

Correction! The new "I Spy" DVDS are NOT remastered or changed in any way from the ones that came out already, and in apparent proof of that, the word "remastered" is removed from the set box. HOWEVER, the episodes are now in chronological order from how they were aired, instead of organized via location, as the first set did. The commentaries are the same. So, if you already bought the first set and don't care that they aren't in show order, there is no reason to buy this second set.

So it is the same set, but just ordered in correct order? If I get them, I will probably get the correctly ordered ones.

I just got the first two seasons a week or so ago. We're going to watch a few episodes today. It has literally been a decade or more since I've seen an episode. This should be fun!
Edit: Hey, looky there! Right after I posted this, I noticed I am no longer a student anymore. I'm a Counselor. Woo hoo! ;D

Just finished watching another DVD of this today. I am netflixing them, as many as they have.
With that said, I am going to be trying my hand at my first ever I, Spy fanfic.
*knees shaking*
Mona... is that offer to beta for me still open?

Absolutely, Jo! I'd be HAPPY to do so! There is little "I Spy" fanfic out there as folks are intimidated by getting the dialogue between Kelly and Scotty correctly; the right amount of banter, seriousness, fighting, etc.
"I Spy" was a magnificent series. I know all you folks watching the episodes for the first time in a long time will really enjoy them.
Plus, Robert Culp was at the HEIGHT of his gorgeousness in his mid-30s.
