From DVD Review of The Equalizer: Season One - I never saw more than snippets of the show, so I have no idea how Bobby would have done in the role (other than the little Mona-voice in my head that tells me he would have been perfect )

Hello, MyTatuo,
Yes, the "I spy" forum has been discussing this a lot since the DVDs just came out. Woodward was so "perfect" for the role, it's hard to imagine anyone else doing such a stupendous job. I was a big fan of "The Equalizer" and have a ton of the episodes on old VHS tapes. I also wrote Edward Woodward a fan letter in Cornwall, and he sent me back a hand-written response! He was so sweet!
Culp is, in my opinion, one of the all-time best actors ever, and so would have been able to do well in this role, as he's done well in everything else. One wonders in what ways he would have differed from Woodward's McCall, but I cannot actually conceptualize those differences.

I think Culp could have pulled it off. No doubt it would have a been quite a bit different than Woodward, but Culp has played such a wide variety of roles so it doesn't seem impossible.

I watched the show when it was on and am still a big fan of it. Though now I couldn't see another actor being in the role.
I agree I could see Culp playing that role and If history had been different most deffinatly Culp could have pulled the role off very well and think it would have fit his abilities rather well.
