I just hit up deepdiscountdvd to work on my wishlist, and noticed season 1 is ranked number one out of the top 20 DVD's sold.

FANTASTIC NEWS!!
These last couple of years have been terrific. First we get that Ralph statue and now this. I don't think any of us would have ever believed this show would get so much press and a revival of such good fortune.
2005 is just a great year for The Greatest American Hero.

I second that emotion. I often make copies of my favorite old TV shows for freinds and family. Ussually not store-bought product, but stuff I taped off the TV back in the day. Never for money, just to introduce them to the classics.
But I've purposely been abstaining from giving anyone any GAH tapes, and I'll hesitate to even loan out my DVDs. I'm dedicated to doing everything I can to increase sales of the official product. I bought three extra copies. One went to a freind as a belated holiday gift last weekend; the other is going to another next weekend as a belated birthday gift. I'm planning on giving a set to a family that always has me over for Pesach. And I'll probably be buying more. GAH DVDs are my all purpose gift for the forseeable future.

Just checked out deepdiscountdvd.com again this morning, the 1st season set is still at number 1. Also it's moved up over at amazon.com, now sitting at number 22. While the 2nd season is currently ranked at #237 on the same page.

I work at TARGET and we STILL havent even gotten ours. I bought mine at Best Buy for $17.99. Media Play was selling them for $29.99!!!!!!!

Is that normal for TARGET to get new releases so many days after the street date? Yeah, 29.99 is the suggested list price for this set.

Thats the thing. We get them several days before the realease date and have them backstocked until release day. We STILL havent gotten any in. That has got to be hurting sales. Especialy being that the first week they would have been selling for $15.99.

I live in central New Jersey and I went on a tour of local outlets this morning and didn't see any GAH on the shelves. Not at Target, Circuit City, Best Buy, nor Costco.
I plan on ordering 2 more from DeepDiscountDVD today; I've got a few friends with birthdays coming up in March.

Jersey Turnpike...right Tony? lol..just a lame attempt at TGAH humor. So...no copies at Best Buy or Circuit City? Wow I forgot to look in CC's ad, but the set appeared in BB's ad over the weekend. I guess they sold out?

For this set to do well with large retailers not carrying it, would be a testament to how special it is.

Well the Best Buy I go to near home and work both had in at least a dozen copies where I bought mine.
If I hadn't already done tapes for a bunch of folks years back, I'd probably be buying them DVDs now but as is, I just finished a whirlwind of converting folks to Firefly by buying loads of sets for people so I'm a bit broke to be doing that again this soon.
I heard some Best Buys on the east coast sold out of stock and the Wal-Mart were down to 3 from an inital stock of 10. So I think it's selling well due to the low price and nostalgia factor - and of course I htink there's a bigger fanbase for the show then they realize- they're just not exactly a visible "Trekkie" type fandom.

It's only been up since Monday, and we have over 200 views on some topics. That's not just from us 25 (or so) members who have registered.

Just to clarify, I only went in to one location each of the four retail outlets I mentioned; the ones closest to my house. There could be plenty at other locations of these chains, for all I know.

Hey Folks, I live out here on the east coast in Annapolis, MD. I opted to wait for the DVD to hit the store shelves instead of ordering it online.
BIG MISTAKE!
My local Circuit City (which did not feature it in this weeks ad) didn't have any and when I checked the Best Buy down the road, I couldn't find any, either. I asked for help and they didn't show any in the computer. I went back the next day and they had sold the 10 copies they received! I was a little steamed, to say the least. I then went to another Best Buy 20 minutes away and they were sold out, too! Checked the Walmart in that area and they had none.
So, I placed my order through deepdiscountdvd. I've learned my lesson!
Still, I can't help but smile at the rate at which it's selling! Just wish I had one of my own already!

Yeah, this is something I discussed with my cousin a few days ago. He's not a big GAH fan, he remembers the show but he really wasn't into but he knows that I love it. He called me up the other day and was amazed how high the GAH DVD was ranked, especially for an old show that hasn't been rerun in years. We both agreed that GAH is clearly A LOT MORE POPULAR then any of us ever realized. I mean this DVD is selling like crazy. Plus just not being aired since the late 80s has people wanting the series again. It hasn't been rerun all the time like other vintage 80s shows such as The A-Team, Knight Rider or MacGyver has. GAH has this subtle, underground popularity sorta like The Karate Kid. The Greatest American Hero is really taping into the nostalgia factor for tons of Gen Xers that either grew up or came of age in the 80s. I can see why Cannell Productions/Anchor Bay would want to release all three DVD sets so close together, seperated by just a couple of months. They probably figure it's best to cash in on what is likely to be the immediate ressurgent popularity of TGAH that probably won't last beyond this year or next year. Whenever the novelty of it all wears off for the general public. -scenario-

Gen X'ers? That was tag for the 90's generation. Meaning 'standing for nothing'.
"figure it's best to cash in on what is likely to be the immediate ressurgent popularity of TGAH that probably won't last beyond this year or next year. Whenever the novelty of it all wears off for the general public. "
Novelty? I know some ebay and yahoo sellers who have been making a minimum of $200 a month on bootlegs of this series for over 5 years. Not a trend.
"for an old show that hasn't been rerun in years"
You have to keep in mind. FX, Family Channel, KDOC, and others have been airing this show off and on for the past 10 years.
Releasing seasons so close together is just good buisness sense. You get more bang for your buck on your ad compaign. Rather doing a promo blitz now then another one in a year. You instead ride the wave on ONE ad blitz.
GAH will ALWAYS have a following and always has. My nine year old son has been watching my first season DVD's and it is something he will now look back at with fondness.
