Does anybody know what other episodes have replaced music aside from the pilot? I haven't been able to watch any of the other episodes yet.

I will keep saying this until I am a blueish/purple color in the face. How in the hell can you allow My Heros Have Always Been Cowboys to be released on DVD and NOT PAY FOR THE RIGHTS TO THE SONG... the REASON FOR THE EPISODE TITLE TO BEGIN WITH?! Are those Willie Nelson 'rights' so very expensive these days? Are they? Why don't we RETITLE the DON'T MESS AROUND WITH JIM because that's obviously GONE too. A R G H . I think it's gonna be a long, long time before I get over this.

You know. After watching the DVDs a few times the only song that i really can't stand is the one in the beging of the pilot.Heard again on the way to nelson coreys.Just very out of place if you ask me. I think the should have just used the instrumental version of GAH music. The other music isnt too bad. The scene in reseda rose where ralph is on his way to tarzana. The music there took some getting used to but not to bad.Kinda superman inspired theme

Hello, this is my first post, although I've been watching the forum for years! I was a big fan of the show as a child and was keeping an eye on this site waiting for the day there'd be mention of a DVD, finally it happened!
I watched the first four episodes and was amazed at how I still find them interesting after 24 years. I've NEVER seen these in reruns locally, so I kind of expected I may be very disappointed to find it couldn't live up to my memories. I was wrong!
At any rate, does anyone know where I can find a list of the songs featured in the episodes on the DVD? Surprisingly there doesn't seem to be any credit given in the credits on each show.
Many of the songs were really great. I run an internet radio station and my listeners have had a lot of interest in the release of this show on DVD, I would love to be able to play some of the music for them. (I of course already have the title song).
Any info would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

Welcome to the board cdguy! Which songs specifically are you talking about? The cover tunes (Help Me Rhonda, Rocketman, etc) were never credited in the show. But all of the original tunes Stephen Geyer wrote (Hang On Sister, Anytime You Need Me, etc) for the show are credited at the end of each episode. If it's the Geyer tunes you are looking for, they've never been released. Except for Sum of My Old Friends, which can be found on Joey Scarbury's album, and soon to be reissued on CD America's Greatest Hero.

Cool! Thanks for the info. I have the America's Greatest Hero CD, so I'll check out that song that Scarbury did. There was one song in particular in the pilot I really liked, when they were all driving together. The lyrics talked about the guys mom and dad not understanding him, and not having a job, it just had a good sound to it. I'll see what I can dig up about the artist you told me. It's always so frustrating when someone has their music in a movie or tv show and it's never made available to the public

Greenguy, That Scarbury song wasn't the one I was looking for, but MAN I love that one too! I guess I better give his whole album a full listen. It's goin' straight to the rotation Thanks again for the help, atleast I won't drive myself crazy looking for a song I can't get!

cdguy, please keep a watch here for any updated information about the music heard in TGAH. Stephen Geyer has expressed interest in releasing a CD with several of the original songs he wrote for the show. If he feels enough interests in the project exists, he'll go forward with it.

LOL,
I found his website last night and emailed him. I told him how much I enjoyed the music and hoped he'd make it available.
So he'll have at least one more potential sale to hopefully persuade him to release the music.
I will keep watching the GAH site too, you guys have a great site here. I really enjoyed reading through it over the past year or so.

I'm sure Stephen Geyer will appreciate hearing from you.
Thanks for the good words about the site! We're in the midst of a major overhaul, so you should see new things, and revisions of previously written material pop up here and there.

Does anyone know if they even tried to get the rights to use the covers of 'Rocket Man', 'Help me Rhonda', etc?
Or did they just not bother in the first place figuring it would be too much?

My guess is they played it cheap and just cut those songs out that they didn't have the majority of the rights to. As we've discussed, it would be one thing to cut out a song performed by the original artist, but these were COVER versions, performed by Joey Scarbury (and his versions were excellent, by the way), so how much could it have run them? So far, we have no answer to that.
As a side note, I will admit that the music they used to replace the song My Heros Have Always Been Cowboys does at least fit the scene (100x better than the crap they used to replace Rocket Man), but someone should still be kicked for not even shelling out the cash to buy the rights to the song that was responsible for the title of the episode to begin with! <shaking head>

the one song i missed for personal reasons is one i cant even remember. it was when he was flying around searching for rhonda's mom in roseda rose. i remember watching that episode with a song there giving it a real human emotion (famous for GAH in my opinion). instead it was replaced with some 'hero' muzak for some reason. UGH.
glad to have the dvd's, but like i said before. i would have spent $5 to $10 more for 'untouched' epsiodes. but that is because i am a fan. when trying to introduce this series to a new audience, they needed a price cut. sad reality. so music was compromised.
i think. ;D

I'm not mad about the music replacement,I'm just glad to have The Greatest American Hero on DVD I am too but honestly if they were to rerelease Season 1 with the original music I'd be willing to buy the set all over again. It's made that big of a difference to me.

Agreed. 100% Write to the creator of the show and let him know that. It can't hurt.

I'm also not mad about the music replacement, after all Geyer's original music remains intact. But I would buy it again too if the original cover tunes were put back in. Another idea would be an entire box set containing all 3 seasons. Maybe even throwing in a extra disc with bonus material like was done with the huge Space:1999 box set.

Judging from the various zombie movies Anchor Bay has released they don't seem to mind putting out "fancier" versions of the same thing... I can imagine them actually doing this if enough people wanted it.
