Hi gang,
An old GAH fan here, brought back to my favorite childhood show thanks to the new DVD release. Regarding the music changes...
I'm seeing a lot of people talking about the changed music (which I'm upset about too, of course-- I would have gladly paid twice the SRP to have a set with the correct music, but I'll take what I can get.)... and I keep hearing a lot of people mention how upset they are that "Rocketman" by Elton John was removed.
Thing is, I have no memory of this song being used. I've gone over my original VHS tapes a bit (not deeply, I admit) and I can't find it.
However, David Bowie's "Space Oddity" (generally referred to as "Major Tom") was in my original copy of the Pilot and is also gone from the DVD. The scene in question is when Ralph first gets the suit. As he pulls out the instruction book, the music swells and it starts playing "This is Ground Control to Major Tom / You've really made the grade / and the papers want to know whose shirts you wear / Now it's time to leave the capsule if you dare." And then of course, Ralph puts the instructions back and doesn't notice as they fall out while he walks away. I thought it was incredibly fitting -- the sense of having come into something bigger than you, and even the "whose shirts you wear" line which made no sense to me in the original Bowie song but worked so well in this context! And then there's the unspoken drama of knowing how ol' Major Tom ended up, while Ralph goes and loses the Instruction Book...
It's a scene that has always stuck with me, and I was very dissapointed to see it changed.
So I figure one of three things has happened here...
* I'm missing the Rocketman scene completely, and both songs were changed;
* There were two versions of the pilot, one that used Bowie's "Space Oddity" and one that used Elton John's "Rocketman;"
* People have the two songs confused...?
I doubt it's the latter as a LOT of people have been referring to Rocketman. I'd be very greatful to any info that anyone could provide. Thanks!
