I wish someone at Cannell Productions thought like this (from the article posted earlier):
---------------------------------
However, there are exceptions. Moonlighting is one of the success stories. After more than two years of lobbying by fans, the first two seasons of the show are scheduled for release this May with the music intact.
"I was unwilling to replace the music," said Moonlighting creator and executive producer Glenn Gordon Caron, who now produces Medium. "I felt that was integral to the show. That really stymied its video and DVD release for years."
At one point, Anchor Bay Entertainment, one of the DVD distributors that held the rights, suggested cherry-picking the episodes, releasing only those that didn't contain music.
"I said, 'That's absurd. I have no interest in you doing this,'" Caron said.

Well its possible they feel Moonlighting was much more popular then GAH and so can justify the cost.

But the other difference is that GAH used covers of famous songs, not the originals -- and covers do cost much, much less than the original recordings.
It doesn't mean that it isn't still expensive, but it doesn't also preclude that Cannell was just being a little cheap -- GAH seems to be selling well enough that all 3 sets will be out this year -- things don't get released in a hurry unless they're selling at a rate that makes the producers want to repeat the experience....

You're right, and I totally agree. No way it would cost as much to license cover songs as it would originals, and now fans of the show who are buying the DVD will have no idea that Joey recorded such great cover versions of those songs in the first place, unless they find bootleg copies elsewhere, which is one thing I was hoping the DVD release would finally put a rest to. I mentioned that specific thing in the letter I mailed to Stephen J. Cannell.
