It looks like they have the entire 3 series on DVD already. The episodes: Divorce Venusian Style - The Price Is Right - The Resurrection Of Carlini - Heaven Is In Your Genes might be probably on "Part 4" of their set (I'm guessing). Btw, how comes they already have them available over there?

Yes, you're right - those episodes ARE on Box #4 (I have it). I can understand why they kept the 'Suit Was Meant For' and 'Newlywed' episodes on the same set (even though they're out of original airing order), but I don't understand why the order of the other episodes on Box #5 is so out-of-whack. As to why it's already available there and not here - who knows? All the Japanese sets have become available far sooner than the USA sets, and they also contain all the original music which, as we all know, can't be said for the USA DVDs. (sigh) Also, the site is: www.cdjapan.co.jp/

Who knows why... may be they don't come from the same source.. Do they still have the same menus and the extras the US version has? The source material (episode prints) are the same as the U.S. release. But it's a totally different company releasing the Japanese discs, so no bonus material, and the packaging & menu design is different.

Yup. And very stripped down as far as menus goes. One cool thing - the artwork / packaging is outstanding and each set also includes a 'comic book like sketch' of each character from the show. Very cool.

ah, alright, so the Japs just purchased the copyrights for the whole series and came out with their own dvds.. Oh well, they might have found it way cheaper instead of purchasing and re-selling the finished US-version DVD, smart guys Japanese are stronger in cartoons and all that, so they pointed more on attaching the little comic book rather than creating a good DVD menu structure. But the songs issue remains a mistery then..

So how much does the japanese sets cost in US Dollars?
Sound slike if you're a mega fan you'll buy the US sets for the extras and the Japanese sets for the unaltered episodes.
Also is it possible to watch the episode without any subtitles?

I'm new here. I absolutely loved the Greatest American Hero when growing up... and all I have to say is "I grew up on this guy" However. I am VERY upset that the U.S. versions have been altered (original music removed). I have not yet purchased the U.S. version and may actually decide NOT to get it. I have located the japanese releases but have found that they are selling for aprox. $132. U.S. dollars per set (5 sets total)... if my conversion is correct? My question is... is this the only outlet for the japanese versions online? www.cdjapan.co.jp/search.html?type=GC&word=greatest+american&restrict=ALL&step=50&sub=Also.... how many episodes have been altered??? Please describe how much we are losing in the U.S. release, so I can be aware of what I need to find elsewhere. I cannot imagine how anyone thought it would be acceptable to release the series with the content changed. My letter to Stephen Cannell will be sent very soon. If I have to spend $600 on japanese imports to get the "real deal" then I'll do it. It's Cannell's and Anchor Bay's LOSS. dudz

That is a good site. Also, I can help with obtaining the Japanese DVDs at a lower price. If interested, write to me at:
kolchak@ameritech.net
And, to answer your question about what you'd be losing if you buy the USA release, ALL the cover songs that appeared in the show are gone and replaced with alternate music. All the ORIGINAL songs written specifically for the show are still intact. So, if you haven't seen the show in a while, it'll be confusing as hell because some of the outstanding songs you remember will still be in there (Dreams, Sometimes, etc.) while others are gone (Eve Of Destruction, Rocket Man, etc.)
It's even more confusing with a show like this because Stephen Geyer wrote such great material specifically for the show, and other times they'd use a cover song, but ALL the songs were PERFORMED by Joey Scarbury, so I guess you could say anytime you don't hear his signature (a.k.a. GREAT) voice, a song that used to be there isn't anymore, if that makes any sense.

The Japanese have the rights to lots of "American" shows. They are releasing Houston Knights on DVD, but only in Japan. That stinks.

Received this set today. Watching "Vanity, Says The Preacher" right now - the quality is incredible - wild to see this so crystal clear and completely uncut. Ditto for all the episodes from season three on this set.

They re-arranged the order of the season three episodes on the Japanese DVDs a bit. Talk about going from excellent to crap fast...
The first DVD in the set has:
This Is The One The Suit Was Meant For The Newlywed Game Desperado
And the last DVD in the set has:
Thirty Seconds Over Little Tokyo It's Only Rock N' Roll Vanity, Says The Preacher
(ouch)

Hmmmm......indeed. That is an interesting lineup...do you suppose that this was the way the episodes were supposed to air during the original run had ABC decided not to pull the plug? (Although, then again, "Vanity..." would not have made a good series finale, IMO.)

I'm guessing that it could be the order in which the episodes were originally dubbed into Japanese. I know my wife saw many TV shows in her home country of Germany that were shown out of order, and that was supposedly the reason.

Interesting! Thanks. Hey, watching Desperado right now - let me say once again... what a great episode. I wonder when it was shot because it sure is 'classic G.A.H.' much moreso than a lot of other season three episodes. A shame it never aired on ABC (did I mention I hate them? )
