I just picked up the disc at Kim's in NYC (one good thing about New York is that ANYTHING can be found early), and I have Operation Spoilsport on as we speak....
No "Eve of Destruction" -- the scene where Bill yells at the radio "I'm doing the best I can" (the scene I knew had it, it's been 20 years since I saw it), they're playing a new wimp ballad by the same dude who did the new ballad on the pilot. The song is about the world coming to war or something, so they try to at least have the song fit--
--but it's no joke. "Eve" is gone...
I'm gonna check "Classical Gas" in a sec--
As for the disc themselves, the extras (Cannell, Post, etc.) are generic season 2 extras for Cannell shows -- I have SILK STALKINGS season 2, and it's the same docs. The Cannell one IS interesting, so if you don't have SILK, which I assume many don't, it is worth catching.
Alright, it appears they kept one of the old Scarbury tunes --as Katt drives the convertible up the hill, they're playing "I'm No Hero" ....

Just threw in CLASSICAL GAS, and I don't know the episodes by heart, but I went straight to the finale, where the band is playing and Ralph is fighting with the bad guys, and the song is GONE (was it "Brass In Pocket") -- they've reedited the scene, so that we only see the back of Rhonda's head during the song (!!!!!!!) and there's some new song (sung by a girl, in case anyone's wonderin'), with what I assume are more shots of the crowd reacting and watching....
At this point, I'm not buying any defense they're giving -- the first set was a hit, these are COVERS, not the originals (which does make them MUCH MUCH cheaper, although they do cost money), but I think we're in agreement that if they had just not touched "GAS" and "DESTRUCTION" we'd forgive them just about anything. I mean, have pride in your product -- you really did a great job with OPERATION SPOILSPORT, why neuter it....
I am SOOOOO pissed off, and just to make this clear, it is NOT an April Fool's joke...although seeing how they now have the Classical Gas scene is kinda funny in a pathetic way...
At the end she's singing "Wings of Love" in a club as Ralph Bill and Pam watch -- they are showing her lips, so I assume this was the original tune, yes? (It's unfolding as I spew -- I mean, write!)

I knew this was going to happen. Oh Dear!!!
It seems like the powers that be want to please the public by releasing DVDs of these classic shows but want to do a half a__ job. I made the decision not to purchase Season two because I suspected a great deal of the songs would be gone. Just my two cents. I hope I don't tick anyone off. Here we go again!!!
Btw, it is Ralph who hits the car radio saying “I'm doing the best I can” during the song “Eve of Destruction”, not Bill. Bill was telling the computer not to be so smart when it logged him out.

These things are important, I agree, but...um...Michael Paré is still there, right?

I saw him watchin' Rhonda from the side as she sang "Wings of Love" or whatever, so he hasn't been surgically removed...while not really watching anything in detail, they probably cut to MORE shots of him watchin the band at the big concert to cover the fact they cut all the head-on shots of Rhonda singing....
so I guess Michael Pare fans can rejoice!
On a more positive note, the photo gallery isn't huge, but there are some cool shots of behind the scenes stuff (Katt hung up on harnesses, crews setting up shots) and there are a LOT of photos of Pare and others in some convertible hot rod with flames painted on the side...does anyone know what episode this car was feature in? It appears most if not all of the behind-the-scenes shots are taken from that episode's filming...
I haven't checked out the script, cuz I think you have to install software to look at it....

Well, yes the 1st set was a hit. BUT, the 2nd season was announced before the first season was released. At that time a hit by pre-orders only. The 2nd season was in the middle of being produced as the 1st season actually hit the shelf. So no way was Cannell Productions going to stop in mid-stream and correct what they'd already changed. That is sad, really sad. One question, Jim. Are the 30 second (or 60 second, in the case of Who's Woo in America) teasers intact before the opening credits of each episode? Thanks for the report on the changes.

Oooh! I'm rejoicing! ;D
I've got to borrow my son's car to run to Fry's and buy Season 2! Maybe I'll send him. I can withstand the usual eye-rolling about Michael Paré. LOL!

The Villicana Piranha 1st appeared in Operation:Spoilsport, and went on to appear in several more episodes. The car was eventually handed down to Joey, and was still glimpsed in the 3rd season.

Ahh, so the car wasn't exclusive to one episode, so maybe the shots are from different eps... I have seen no teasers before the episodes --I've checked only OPERATION SPOILSPORT and CHICKEN IN EVERY PLOT from the opening, however, but neither has a teaser. It doesn't bother me in that I'd like to be surprised as to the episodes elements (the I SPY opening credits, which often contain scenes from the upcoming episode, often give away who the villain is in mystery episodes and stuff like that! ) but I agree they would be awesome as extras! But I digress -- I don't think they're there! DON'T RUN OUT TO FRY's -- the street date is Tuesday, so I doubt they have it -- I just know two locales that often "beats the street" in NYC -- they often have stuff the Thu or Fri before release.... I'm currently watching CHICKEN IN EVERY PLOT, which for whatever reason is near my favorite ep from childhood (I was 11-13 during the show's existance) -- it is kinda a stretch that Pam pays for all the school kids to come on the trip with them(!), but I remember know how scared I was when that guy with the nosebleed was chased by the voodoo guys in the first scene -- I don't mean I was terrified, but I really liked it and that scene stuck with me a long time. But I'll save this sorta discussion for the non-dvd thread... Any other questions? The booklet is just trivia questions, with the answers on the back cover -- I don't mean the trivia is bad, it's really cool, actually, but it's the only thing in the book -- and question four is about EVE OF DESTRUCTION!!!! They friggin' take the song out but offer a question that only makes sense if the song is in! This is turning more and more into a black comedy!

And greenguy, obviously you're right about the set bein' in production before 1 sold so well, I hadn't thought of that in my rage -- but even if it wasn't huge hit, all they needed was to pay for 2 tunes rights ("Destruction" and "Pocket"), which seem really necessary to those specific episodes -- but I know I'm preachin' to the converted here!
WARNING: MICHAEL PARE ALERT AHEAD!
Oh, yeah, my dad taught at Manhattan College with Terrence Pare, Michael's brother, about 20 years ago (I think Terrance was an adjunct, he wasn't there long) -- I think he wrote "Solar Force" for his bro later, if you've seen that one -- it's not the best, alas!
But my dad said he was a nice guy, and he had only good stuff to say about his brother (who was in "Streets of Fire" at the time), so there's a little Pare-trivia for you...

YES. I HAVE A FEW QUESTIONS.
At the very end of the Don't Mess Around With Jim episode - what song is played?
At the very end of Operation Spoilsport - where A Beautiful Morning originally played - WHAT is there now?
At the very end of the Hog Wild episode, where Sound Of Silence originally played - WHAT is there now?

How about Hog Wild? Scarbury did an excellent job with 'Bad Moon Rising' and 'Sound of Silence.' I assume those are both gone as well. Man, this really sucks.

All right, Maxwell, gimme a few minutes...just don't kill the messenger!
Gotta say, I've been watching CHICKEN IN EVERY...which I guess doesn't have any songs to be substituted, and I do have to admit -- it is reallll nice to see the episodes looking sharp with good sound (the picture actually looks kinda soft, but it's clearly inherent in the episode), and uncut (not countin' music)...
Pam's getting kindapped right now! Yikes -- I love this episode! It did scare me as a kid -- they're putting the blood/paint on her as I type!
I'm angry like all, but I don't want it to be all misery! I still, unfortunately, think the disc is a must-have for fans! I'd love if we'd all boycott and they'd repress with the music, but I know I'm too friggin' weak -- since I had nothing but the pilot available to me for 15+ years, I know I'll be pickin' up season 3 even if this crap continues...pathetic, perhaps, but honest...
I'll check those 3 eps now....

JimK - I WILL NOT KILL YOU. I AM JUST UPSET. ARGHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OK... (pant pant pant).... some more questions for you:
In There's Just No Accounting - when Ralph is flying back (towards the beginning, after saving the girl) to collect the cash off the dock, Taxman (Beatles) used to play there. What's there now?

well, at the end of DON'T MESS, there's a very late 90's Poison meets Richard Marx tune called, apparently "It Ain't Easy", but it is for only 10 seconds or so after the freeze-frame on Bill and Ralph -- is there another part I shoulda looked at? It sounded horrible, but it was mercifully quick...
At the very end of HOG WILD, as Bill and Ralph drive away, they're playing a country tune (which doesn't sound anywhere near as bad as the tune in DON'T MESS and OPERATION that goes "It's a heavy load" -- if it's the same guy who did the others, he got something OK this time...
And I don't mean it's acceptable, but as someone who doesn't remember the original at all, I think it almost seems to fit and sound like it coulda been an 80s tune -- I'm not saying you shouldn't be pissed, but it doesn't stand out like that tune in the pilot did...
and YIKES -- the end of OPERATION SPOILSPORT has another awful song that sounded like "you saved the game" or something, but it was truly wretched -- and watching the earlier scene, with Bill at the computer and Ralph trying to fly up the elevator shaft, well, the new song, which SUCKS, is "I can't stop, you can't stop, the end of the world" and doesn't work with the editing rhythm of the scene as well (I know it plays when they're on the highway too, but I haven't gotten there yet). I mean, the scene just SITS there, as this dumb lyric is repeated over and over and over -- the scene is worse than all of you are imagining...
This is really cheap on their part -- again, if they had JUST cleared Destruction (and "morning," I'd forgotten about that final gag) and Pocket I really think we might've survived the others, but to drop those three REALLY alters those episodes.

I could tell you the episodes probably from the photo's. You'll be able to also once you watch all the shows again. NO TEASERS! What's up with that? The Hunter DVD set has the teasers intact.

I have to say the manner in which the cover tunes are replaced has made me reconsider buying the second season. I wouldn't have minded if they just replaced the cover songs with instrumental stock GAH music from the show, but to substitute them for bland crappy pop music....what the.. ? I keep hoping that perhaps in the wake of the huge success that they've had with the sales of these sets, they'll re-release them all as a boxed set with original music (cover songs) intact.

regarding "Taxman," I ain't even gonna look right now! Beatles tunes are SO damn expensive, I wouldn't even blame them -- but except for HERO fans, "Eve of Destruction" is a relatively obscure song at this point, how much could a COVER of it cost? Something, but... Plus, doesn't Michael Jackson own Beatles publishing? He's probably raised the rates to pay for his defense...

BUT to give you a idea about the rights. The television station I work for pays a blanket fee of 75,000 a year to have permission to use whatever songs they want on air. Yes, Jackson owns The Beatles material.
