When I was a kid I remember thinking that they were making the suit give Ralph too many powers. I mean, he was impervious to bullets, knives etc. (albeit his head was exposed.) He could fly, had super strength, saw holograms, could become invisible, shrink and grow, pyrokinesis, etc.
If Ralph had not lost the instruction book he would have been absolutely invincible. I guess that was why they did it. Because a hero with no Achilles Heel isn't much fun to watch.
Still, there were so many powers I could not even keep track of them. Does anyone else think there were too many?

Well, as I've always felt ABC never gave the show enough of a chance to survive, I'm one of the ones that feels the suit didn't have ENOUGH powers. Or, at least, Ralph didn't have enough time to discover enough of them - plus there were times when he would learn a power that was only temporary - kind of unique (see: Live At Eleven - Season Three). Just my $0.02.

That's what made "Don't Mess Around With Jim" a great episode. Shows what could have happend to Ralph. No kidding. I imagine James J. Beck was a good, honest and decent man himself, otherwise the greenguys wouldn't have chosen him for the suit. So it's fascinating to think about how good people can be corrupted by the power of the suit. Ralph was in a unique position of not knowing exactly how f*cking powerful he really was. Literally the most powerful man on Earth. It did make me wonder why the greenguys took so long to come and take Beck's suit and instruction book away though. Everytime Ralph and Bill came close to screwing up, the aliens were on them in no time. I agree with Maxwell- F.B.I., I'm also of the opinion the show never gave Ralph enough powers either. I wanted to see more. -scenario

I don't think he has too many powers, in fact, with the writers having Ralph lose the instruction book, it allowed for trial and error with the powers of the suit.
Some of my favorite scenes from the first season are the ones where Ralph finds a new superpower the hard way or at the wrong time. In the pilot, when he runs at Corey's estate, he keeps going faster. Panicking, he tries to stop, but does too quickly and flips into the bushes. Another one is when Bill teaches Ralph pyrokinesis, it backfires where Bill's car catches on fire and blows up. That's part of the fun of the show, having the potential for a wide variety of superpowers that would work or occassionally backfire. You never knew what would happen. I mean, if the writers had gone the other way and gave Ralph few powers, then why have a superhero?

The only thing I didn't like was in the opener of the 3rd season, it seemed you need the book itself to make some of the powers work.

well my opinion is that, it would seem, if he had the book he would have been invincible. but if his only powers were flying and super strength. he wouldnt need the book at all. it would have been nice to add a kryptonite type weakness. just to add to the drama. i dont think the suit and its origins were ever 'fleshed' out enough.

He had a big enough weakness. He's human. So with him being clumsy and making wrong decisions, that showed a lot of him being weak.
