I was wondering if there is anyone out there who can help compile a complete list of the alterations done for the American DVDs. For example :
"Pilot Episode" Rocketman by Elton John replaced with ? Space Oddity by David Bowie replaced with ? Help Me Rhonda by ? replaced with ? Different cut of scene Ralph looking in the mirror at suit.
A comprehensive list would prove interesting as well as useful for those of us who plan on obtaining the Japanese cuts without having to pay for the entire series (some episodes, after all, have been unaltered or insignifcantly altered).
Thanks; David

Well, good luck! I see that as being quite hard because I have never heard of any of these songs that are in the midst of the episodes. These are like songs without titles, perhaps just wrote last minute by some high school contest winners and sung by unknowns. Some of the music is okay, but some of it is quite annoying.

She's right..it appears none of us recognize any of these songs used as replacements. So it's impossible for us to tell you the names.

Actually, I am more interested in a complete list of the songs removed. Knowing what they were replaced with would be a bonus, I think it would be great to have a comprehensive list of everything which was changed or altered from the original as with my first post on the Pilot. Since no one likes the new songs anyway, they aren't, per se, important.

Actually right after season 1 was released, I swear I remember J putting together a list of what was expected to be cut from seasons 2 & 3 based on the songs missing from Season one. Somebody can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the only songs missing from Season 1 are: Help Me Rhonda Space Oddity Rocketman I'm Looking Through You My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys

In which episode was "I'm Looking Through You" used? (Are you talking about the Beatles' song?)

The one were Pam's parents visit. When Ralph comes to the restuarant invisible and calls on the phone, they play some of that song. Here they opted for no music at all, which is ok I guess instead of some stupid song that don't match the scene.

Okay, here's as complete a list as I have found so far.
The Pilot
"Help Me Rhonda" replaced. "Rocket Man" replaced. "Space Oddity" replaced.
Summary: Butchered and obvious.
Here's Looking at You Kid
"Looking Through You" replaced with background music (no lyrics).
Summary: Not noticeable if you hadn't seen the original recently.
Saturday on Sunset Boulevard
A very brief clip of "Help Me Rhonda" replaced.
Summary: Not noticeable if you hadn't seen the original recently.
Reseda Rose
"Rocket Man" replaced with orchestra music.
Summary: Not that noticeable but it is an extended scene.
My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Title song replaced.
Summary: Noticible and obvious but does not substantially harm the show.
Operation : Spoilsport
"Eve of Destruction" replaced.
Summary: Butchered and obvious resulting in cut dialogue and altered scenes to hide the missing song.
Don't Mess Around with Jim
Title song replaced.
Summary: Noticible and obvious but does not substantially harm the show.
Classical Gas
Several songs replaced during concert.
Summary : Butchered and obvious as scenes are cut and altered to hide missing songs and avoid showing Rhonda's lips (since the lyrics wouldn't match).
Devil in the Deep Blue Sea
A song is replaced at the end of the episode. Lyrics were made to match Rhonda's lips, however. The early song remains intact.
Summary: Not noticeable if you hadn't seen the original recently.
There's Just No Accounting
"Taxman" replaced.
Summary: Noticeable but not severely crippling to the episode.
Did I miss any? Third season to come ...

Rhonda's and/or LA Freeway's "Classical Gas" are "Can't Get Enough" by Bad Company and "Brass in Pocket" by the Pretenders. The replacement songs STINK!!

There's gotta be a song (or a whole slew of 'em) missing from "Now You See It." I mean, the long stretches with no sound whatsoever!?Fer crying out loud, if they couldn't get Steve Geyer to write some new tunes to replace the old, they could have at least recycled some of his tunes from another episode to play over those scenes. ANYTHING would be better than droning silence.
But maybe it was always that way. I can't remember.

Apparently we now have to add the honking horn in "The Shock Will Kill You." Perhaps the Blue Guys from Las Vegas copyrighted using car horns as music or something, but the sound effects are now missing!

Carlini, I originally had the same problem when I first listened to "Now You See It." I thought there was something odd, so I tried this technique. I have a DVD player that uses two audio plugs and a third for video. I think it's designed this way for a stereo TV. I have a mono set, and when I switched the audio plug, I heard the song. I think it's the Geyer song that plays then. All the other pieces of music work as well, so it may just be that one item. I hope this helps.

Okay, here's as complete a list as I have found so far. SNIP Did I miss any? Third season to come ... The episodes where comments are butched and obvious, a couple of which are also said to contain dialog cuts and alterations to hide the missing song(s). Is there alot missing like 2 minutes or are these just a second or 2 here and there. As long as the episodes aren't missing alot like syndicated programming then i think I'll be happy with them as I haven't seen them since they originally aired and I was pretty young then.

The cuts do not reduce the episode length as they are usually just brief dialogue. The cut songs are replaced with modern songs. Unless you want to go all out and buy Japanese DVDs (make sure they will work in your DVD player first) then I would recommend the US DVDs even with the changes.

Keep in mind that it would still be worth obtaining even a few of the Japanese DVDs if you don't buy them all, because some episodes were butchered worse than others. The worst changes (cuts, etc.) I have seen so far have been on the following episodes:
Classical Gas Operation Spoil Sport Hog Wild My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys There's Just No Accounting... Don't Mess Around With Jim Reseda Rose

The cuts do not reduce the episode length as they are usually just brief dialogue. Except in the case of Classical Gas. The version featured on the DVD set, clocks in at over 2 minutes shorter than when originally broadcast.

I just saw It's Only Rock and Roll and noticed that the episode is only 46 minutes. Is anyone aware of whether or not they made changes to the music here. I would think they did, but it was not a favorite of mine so I really don't remember much about it all. It FEELS like something was edited or removed, but I couldn't really tell.
