Hello Everyone. This is an incredible web site, done with far more care and attenetion then the offical american DVD releases. Good job to greenguy and all who put this together. Anyway I was wondering if anyone else noticed the sound mixing problem on the episode the "The Shock will Kill You." The Honking of Bill's car horn is gone, the genuis sound mixers forgot to put it back in when they remastered for the DVD. Bill complains about the horn and even disconnects it to stop the sound, but for us watching the episode there is no horn sound. I have not watched all of the episodes yet, are there other sound mixing problems besides "The Shock will Kill You" and of course the bucthered music

Yes, that is just nuts. But, for some demented reason, the MAJORITY of the car horn noises are missing from the Japanese DVD as well, EXCEPT the scene where Bill disconnects the horn and Ralph does the 'shave and a haircut' gag with his hand on the car horn. THOSE car horn sounds are there. Yet another reason to go with the Japanese DVDs! -Frank

The horn sounds are also missing from my bootleg copy which was recorded from the FX airing. I thought that was strange too. As long as I have the songs, I don't care.

Thanks for bringing that up - that's another really strange point. The broadcast masters and the USA DVDs have ALL the sounds missing, yet the overseas DVDs have the most important ones put back in, almost like they 'remembered'. Weird.

When they originally broadcast were the sounds there? I noticed on my bootlegs made from TV masters that the sounds were missing as well. I just wondered if they were there originally.

Yes, the original broadcasts on ABC had all the horn sounds in it - I had to go back to my tapes to be sure, but they ARE there.

Yup, just pulled out my 23-year-old video tape (recorded from the original network broadcast) and compared it with the DVD. I can't beleive it; they took out almost all the horn honking. So now, as others have mentioned above, Bill opens the hood and pulls the wires to silence a horn that isn't even honking; and Ralph's shave and a haircut gag is accompanied by silence.
If they had decided that the horn honking was overdone or distracting and decided to tone it down or cut it back a little, that might be one thing. But this...?
Maybe the horn sound effect was recorded from Barry McGuire's car. That would certainly explain a lot.

And that's what's so weird about the Japanese DVDs - the sounds are missing in the all the same spots, EXCEPT in the scene when Bill gets out of the car and pops the hood - all horns in that scene are still there. Go figure. Another reason to despise the USA release, I suppose...

oh dear...were the horn honks part of the Music Rights too? Sheesh. That's just wacky. (they thought: hey the honks sound like music, out they go) Why are they doing this to us? We remember certain things and they take them away.

Just to throw in another 2 cents of mine on this subject... I don't know why they took some the horn noises out on the Japanese DVDs and ALL of the horn noises out basically on the USA DVDs and broadcast master tapes, but I CAN tell you I think they killed off a bunch of the humor in those scenes (to me) by doing so.
Unfortunately, you'll have to more or less have the original ABC airing of the show to see/hear what I mean, but I think those scenes were overall just funnier and goofier with all those crazy horn sounds in place.

BTW, I love the look on Katt's face when he approaches the lamp store, turning on all the lamps and triggering all the alarms. He's just beyond being shocked (no pun intended) at that point. To bad the stunt double they used for the reverse angle wasn't hip to that.

I agree, and after he says he can't take it anymore, the radio blows up. It's as though he blew up the radio with his "electric" temper.
When I first watched the scene where Ralph does the "Shave and a Haircut" bit, I thought something was amiss since he does the hand bit but there's no horn sound. Although I figured out the joke from the hand gestures, it's not quite as funny as the horn isn't playing.
