Does anyone know how well all three seasons have sold overall? I wonder if Anchor Bay is wishing there was a Season 4 and 5? The Sledgehammer DVDs sold much better than expected and that was an even more obscure 80s show.

My friend, who had S1 and S2 when I saw her last, said she heard around the campfire that they cant' keep 'em on the shelves, at least up here in the Seattle area. She doesn't even have S3 yet, and she's the type to get things before they even hit the shelves!

Alan Spencer (creator of Sledge Hammer!) himself said he heard personally from people at Anchor Bay who told him how much they wished there was a third season of Sledge because it sold so damn well.
It makes me wonder if writing to Anchor Bay and suggesting shows like Hardcastle (mentioning in your letter of course, that you purchased GAH and have been looking for other Cannell shows) would help set a release date for it more quickly. God knows A.B. is already in bed Cannell (and I mean that in the nicest possible way), so it sure couldn't hurt!

What kinda sucks in all this is they (Anchor Bay) can go on to say - "See, we saved all this money by replacing all the songs and no one cared since the sets are selling very well. Lets screw up another tv show!"

Yeah, and I'm sure a quick note to Stephen J. Cannell couldn't hurt, as it's his show:
scannell@cannell.com
As his site states "Although he won't be able to answer all his e-mail, he'll certainly try to respond to as many as possible!", so why not give it a shot?

Why didn't he do that in the A-Team? In the first two seasons, I cannot find anything that has been cut. Granted, the true test is yet to come in Seasons 3 and 4, but if he didn't, why not? What made the Greatest American Hero so useless to him?

I think its a matter of cost vs return.
Lets face it - A-Team was MUCH more popular than GAH.
I never thought in a million years i would see GAH on DVD.
On the latest Simpsons dvd set, the commentaries talk a little about song rigths and say that these days it is very, very costly to get song rights to use in tv shows. They said a 10-20 clip could cost like $75,000, more depending on the artist. And since video rights were NOT included in the original lisence for these songs, they want to make it up now.
Married With Children on DVD had to change the theme song starting with Season 3 since it got too expensive to license. It seems each release has to be negotiated.
They (Anchor Bay) felt that the cost for all the songs would outweigh they money they would make on sales.
Shows like A-Team or Moonlighting probabvly have a larger fan base to justify the cost.
Then there are breaks. The Simpsons commentaries also mentioned they get good breaks on song rights since many of the artists used are fans of the show.

I have heard that Universal retained the rights to the A-Team, so it would have been THEIR decision whether to retain the original music or not, which they evidently decided to spend the money to do when the DVDs were released. Too bad they didn't own the rights to GAH too.

Who knows? Maybe other DVD companies will see the money saved and do the same thing...that could suck for all future DVD releases.

Coming in a bit late, but I just got my Seasons 2 & 3 today. Lots of catching up to do...
As for the licensing, I wish it worked as more of a percentage thing (that way smaller and more obscure media could get a shot), but that's not how the music industry does business, unfortunately.
