Hello, all, The below article in the NY Times this morning discusses TV shows being released on DVDs. It mentions the problems that many shows have in getting DVD versions out to the public. In particular the article discusses having to buy the song rights, which is why many shows change songs in various episodes; it is just too expensive to do so. Apparently "WKRP" had a huge problem with this as well as TGAH, and songs were changed all over the place. Also, they have to arrange payment with actors if shows were made before DVD release were in their original contracts and this keeps some shows like "Wonder Years" from ever getting produced to DVD (I guess the actors have demanded too many money for the episodes to be released). So, at least we're lucky everything BUT a few songs worked out for TGAH being released! www.nytimes.com/2007/09/24/business/media/24dvd.html?pagewanted=2&_r=1&ref=mediaMona

Not suprising, but sad. I know some shows would be great to have out on DVD, even if some music might have been changed like it was in GAH. It is sad that actors feel they are OWED something more than what they originally got (or so much more) rather than helping fans to enjoy their work over and over again.
I wonder if this is more why some of my fun shows are not out rather than corporate bigwigs with their thumbs up their *****.

Cannell simply kept all the songs he owned the majority of rights too (those written by Stephen Geyer), and cut all the cover songs without even looking into how much it might have cost to include them on the DVDs. Just F.Y.I.

To me, the only episodes that really are hurt are "O:SS" because the song is a linking theme there, "CG" because it cuts out several minutes of the show, and Rocket Man out of the pilot because the song doesn't make sense. Other ones, such as the arcade-type music in "Wizards and Warlocks" wasn't too bad because it sounded like something from an arcade room. The only ones that really bug me are the ones above. But, while I do blame SJC partially (I'd been glad to pay a couple of bucks more for the original music), it's not entirely his fault. It is irksome to me that the US music companies demand so much money from them when they make plenty of money off people who essentially scream on a CD and call it music. They're so money-grubbing that it does get embarrassing to see Japan release the show with all the original music over our own country doing so. What hurts this case too is that the songs weren't old enough to where they didn't have to pay royalties to use them. But, I don't think songs like "That's the way to the zoo" (around the turn of the century) would work in "GAH." :-\

I hear ya, but Cannell could have TRIED. They DID use E.O.D. in the A-Team episode released on DVD, but that's because it wasn't Cannell who had to pony up the cash for it.
Think about that for a minute - the song IS used in a DIFFERENT Cannell show and not even the one it was recorded for! For the DVD release of the show it WAS recorded for (G.A.H., of course), it's cut and replaced, yet they're dumb enough to still leave the DIALOGUE in where Ralph refers to "and the song "Eve Of Destruction" was dedicated to Ralph".
(sigh)

(sigh) Yep... only other reason I'd say he did it is that A-Team lasted longer than GAH, so more will buy that series. However, that said... he should've had the right to use it on both releases if he got the rights, so it's either a. like you said he doesn't give a hoot in a sheep feedlot, or b. the music industry decided to be grubbers and say "nope, it's $100,000 (rough estimate) per shot" and SJC had to choose. Needless to say, he chose the one he could probably recoup the most from. A-Team is the higher priced of the group.

I agree that the music indiscrepancies are not fun to deal with...and I don't see any OVERT problems with change...outside of CLASSICAL GAS and the pilot because the song did not make sense in place of SPACE ODDITY or ROCKETMAN.
I disagree still about EVE OF DESTRUCTION. The only problem with SPOILSPORT was that Ralph still said that instead of the new song title. It worked just as well if not better than EVE did.
EVE made MORE sense in the A-TEAM anyway.

I will concede at least the replacement for Eve of Destruction was the closest to what the feeling of the story was. That said, "This is not your town" for the scenes in the pilot where Ralph walks back to the bus and the drive to rescue Bill does not fit. And the "You Saved the Day," would've been OK, if it wasn't obviously a romantic ballad.

BTW, I was just watching a little Third Season "A-Team" on DVD, and I'm pretty darn certain that, in the episode "Sheriffs of Rivertown", the version of The Pretenders' "Brass in Pocket" that's playing on the jukebox when The A-Team goes into the bar at about 30 minutes into the episode, is none other than the Faye Grant version from "Classical Gas".

Really? That's cool! Anyway to prove it I wonder...maybe in the credits? I know there is another show I have that has a cross-over like that, but I don't recall if it is the A-TEAM or not. Good listening, J-Man.

I could probably tell right away, since I listened to an audio tape I made of "Gas" when I was young so many times, I don't even remember what the original sounds like any more. If it pops up on the car radio, I say to myself, "Self, who in the world is that ruining Brass in Pocket?"

It would be nice to have a YouTube video of the original songs on the episode of CLASSICAL GAS. I am pretty sure that is one of the episodes I do not have.

HD,
Consider buying original DVDs from that tvshrine.com site. They are cheap and solid A quality DVDs.

I have thought about it, but my wife would KILL me if I had two sets of GAH. She hates the set I do have.

So much hate in the world. Why can't we all just get along? Especially those of us who* are married to each other? It's all about tolerance. My wife doesn't hate the shows that I love, she tolerates them. She doesn't hate all the boxes and boxes of Legos I have started pulling out to now play with my kids, she tolerates them. She doesn't hate getting lap dances while I watch, she tolerates them. Well, maybe that one's different... *or is it "whom"? I'd ask a teacher, but they seem to know even less about which is correct

I usually use this method: [glow=red,2,900] "I AM PUTTING ON G.A.H. and you will SIT THERE and LIKE IT!!!"[/glow] (works for me)

Of course, there's also the fun of watching the show while driving across Texas with your parents: Mel (watching show on portable DVD player): *Laughs at Ralph crashing into something* Mom: Mel, what are you watching? Dad: I think it's Ralph. (He should know - one of his favorite stories to tell people is based on the show). Mel: Yep, "The Greatest American Hero." Parents: OK... we were wondering where the yell was from. ---------------------------------- Of course this one is topped by the conversation on the way back home while watching "Emergency!" Parents (hear sirens of Squad traveling down the road on the player - after the fourth ep of a mini-marathon): Uh... Mel, I think you need to leave the fire engine and squad in the station after this episode? Me: Sure (though wanted to see the ep "Snakebite" where Gage is bitten by the rattlesnake.)

She did watch the entire series with me, but now she avoids it at all costs. And she would sleep on the couch and not me...I am too long for it.
