Hello everyone. My name is Bert and I have been costuming as the GAH since Dragon-con 2006. Always a fan of the show, the idea came to me when as a joke, a friend photoshopped my head onto WK's body in that famous pic of the GAH standing in front of the American Flag. My wife and I decided that this would be the best costume for Dragon-con since it was obscure enough that not many people would think of doing it, therefore chances were I would be the only one, yet recognized enough still that people would immediately remember it and smile!
I went on a strict diet and lost 50lbs while my wife got busy with the sewing machine. I also cut my hair (it came down to my waist), and right before the event I spent a whole day at the salon getting it bleached, dyed and curled.
Well, costume was a huge success! HUNDREDS of people came up to me and commented on the costume and took my picture, Im still finding pics online today!
I've since gotten my hair "fixed" and will never do something like that to it again LOL! Instead, we spent the money on a nice wig. Trust me, it's MUCH less hassle! Still need to do some upgrades to the costume here and there, as with any good costume, they are always a work in progress.
More recently we attended FX Show in Orlando this past Jan. where I had the opportunity to actually meet William Katt. He was really nice and was very interested in how we made the costume. We spent a few minutes talking and he signed an autograph for me that reads: "Bert, you look better than me! Best, William Katt"
I am very well aware that NO ONE has ever nor will ever look as good as he did on the show, but I still take it as a complement and an honor.
My wife and I are also both members of the 501st Legion where we costume as the "bad guys" from Star Wars.
Looking forward to meeting everyone here, looks like an awesome group!
