Yeah I'm in the same boat. I hardly tell anyone I love GAH so much. It's an old habit that I have found hard to break, the show is just not something I like to share, I'd do better telling someone I'm into Star Trek.
Even when I was a kid in the 80s, I knew better and kept it to myself. Just because I knew how the show was percieved by most people and that most people simply didn't "get" the joke of the show the way we did. I could talk about Knight Rider, The A-Team, HardCastle & McCormick, MacGyver, Airwolf,....any and every other show from that era. Hell I could even talk about The Dukes of Hazzard, which was made on a 4 year olds mentality. But you were never going to be a cool kid if you brought up The Greatest American Hero. You were just asking for an ass kicking at school if you did that.
Man I'm even having a flashback to the 80s just talking about this---
Thug kid #1: "Did you hear that? That kid over there said he's into that show where that blonde haired dude plays a retarded Superman!"
Thug kid #2: "Let's get some more of the guys and nail him after school!"
*scenario runs for his life*
Alright I'm exaggerating, I never got beat up over GAH. But trust me you would have caught flak over this show and generally been laughed at.
Don't worry, the show has its fans....I guess people just don't like to advertise it to others that much.

That reminds me of when I knew I 'came of age'. I was playing in the front yard with my millenium falcon. Doing the sound effects and everything. Then the girl next door pulled up in her parents car. It hit me like a ton of bricks. 'I don't want to play with Star Wars. I want to play with her.' ;D
So Star Wars playing transformed into action figure movies. A new justified way to play with toys. I still do that today.

My friends still have no clue about the show. I post it every where else that I am involved online. I try and get people together to watch it. I show it to my classes...some of them with people as old as my parents and THEY don't remember it. My mom does and she seems to remember it fondly, but she is not really a TV watcher now...except the news. Especially does not use the DVD player...or rarely. Plus, my dad would probably say no, although he used to like that and the A-TEAM...but now he is too cool apparently.

I just have to post in this thread. "Anytime I mention it, I get the weirdest looks." That goes with most anything I mention. I think it's the city I live in. When I took Season 1 and Season 2 dvds of the show with me when I was gone for a week. I mentioned to my cousin what I brought along. She remembered the show and since both of us were chaperones to our youth church group she thought that would be good to show. It ended badly, only one kid loved it and wanted to borrow the dvds to see the rest of the show. While the others went into another room with another dvd player to watch Madagascar. That group ALSO includes my second(?) cousin or however you want to put it, who likes super hero movies. He loves Spider-Man, but his response to The Greatest American Hero was that "It wasn't good. It's not that it isn't good. It's just not GOOD." A few factors though. Number one, they popped in the pilot and even when I watched the pilot for the first time and they started off with the chase scene with Bill's partner that was an odd starter. Number two, my second cousin LIKED The Hulk. Even though I'm a fan of the tv series The Incredible Hulk, the movie REALLY dragged and stretched too much for my liking. Yet my second cousin liked IT and didn't like Greatest American Hero. Go figure.

GAH has always got a bad rap, people just never understood the concept. Ralph's screaming and crashing into things were what I would always remember as the big turnoffs.

All I have to say is that MyTatuo has spent more time working on the GreatestAmericanHero.com website than any other site. He he had a penny for every hour he spent on it he would be rich! (sigh) The show was just ok, I mean what is the big deal? You want to see a really good show? Night Rider, now that is a show I woudl watch again - ADefWebserver

Go easy on him; he doesn't know "Knight Rider" is a sore subject around here. Also, he gives me free server space for the site (when it's running), so don't fault him for his views. This would be my friend who was working at FX the first day they were on the air, showing all the pilots of their shows (which he could see from the office), including TGAH. And he didn't even appreciate it, whereas I hadn't seen the pilot since the early 80's! How fair is that?! Perhaps getting our non-TGAH-loving friends to post was not one of my better ideas

I'm not sure if Knight Rider is a sore subject here, perhaps some think so because it went toe to toe with GAH,...and GAH lost. But I don't really blame KR for that, it was more ABC's doing. Essentially I would call myself a KR fan, I own the Season 1 and 2 DVDs, and Michael & KITT offer sweet nostalgia. But I'm not the most dedicated KR fan, the problem was that the stories and characters of KR felt very superficial, like there wasn't much else there. Whereas GAH or any other Cannell show had far more depth and interesting characters, with rich dialogue. GAH has never been seen as "cool", I don't know if that can ever change. Star Trek is probably cooler then GAH. Even as a kid I knew how people percieved GAH, they just couldn't see past Ralph crashing into things to see the show we did. I'd bring my friends here, but they probably would write some nasty stuff too, and tell us what losers....errr dedicated fans we are. -scenario

The beginning of the pilot has been discussed in other posts. Though I have found my love for the show again. The beginning segment of the pilot can be a turnoff for some people. I think that's what happened when I showed it to a group of kids when I went to the mountains. That brings up an interesting question. Which episode would you show to others or which episode has friends/relatives liked, if/when you don't start them off with the Pilot? Like say an episode that might wet their taste for the show. Lord knows that's how I get into other shows. House, Buffy, MST3K. I never saw the beginning episode of those shows, just an episode in between that got me hooked to the show. As far as GAH would go I think Now You See It would be a good starter. It has Ralph in the suit early and he's using a suit power, plus his flying is still shown not to be very well. Plus he's saving Pam from a plane crash!

Personally, I agree it was probably more ABC's mucking around with it's slot time that cause GAH's demise. Even with the later eps in the third season, they were overall good ones (Though I don't like "Space Ranger" or "30 Seconds..." (this one more for unanswered questions). I think had it been on any day consistently, we'd had another full season at least. Friday might've still been a death knell if it stayed there, but it'd at least had a fair chance. Now, about friends and "GAH." Most people I talk to my age will go when I talk about the show. I get this with "Doctor Who" too, and it's being made now (though I know more about the original run). When I wear my shirt, I sometimes have to explain where it's from, and people will smile remembering the show or just smile because they think I'm being silly (sometimes both, such as the first time I wore it at a Walkfest.) What facinates me, however, is that there hasn't been at least an attempt to sell shirts with the emblem now in mainstream retail. Retro designs, such as the 01 on an orange shirt for "Dukes of Hazzard" and "M*A*S*H 4077th" shirts, are making a comeback. True, both shows are popular, but there are quite a few that haven't been seen in years too that are being made. Then again... it might be the curse of the "Don't know the show" to do it. Also what's funny is that they have costumes based on shows this year (and BTW the TV shows, not movies) for "Dukes," "Magnum P.I." and "Miami Vice." Very strange to me.

As far as GAH would go I think Now You See It would be a good starter. It has Ralph in the suit early and he's using a suit power, plus his flying is still shown not to be very well. Plus he's saving Pam from a plane crash! Years ago I once showed "Now You See It" to someone and he liked it decently enough until Ralph saved the plane. He started laughing hysterically about the fact that Ralph threw those two guys out of the plane, then flew down with Pam on his back and was able to catch both guys, who all landed in the same place. It wasn't a good laugh, he was laughing at how stupid the episode resolution became and sorta started knocking the entire show. I remember he said something about how fast planes travel relative to the ground, and "dude, maybey the wind was blowing hard!" to get both guys to land in the same place for Ralph. Admitedly, many GAH episodes do have a moment of silliness here and there that can pull someone out of the show. But I would show a new person these episodes: The Hit Car My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys Don't Mess Around With Jim Operation Spoilsport The Beast in the Black Dreams -scenario
