(I originally posted the following in the other thread, about a music video by Joey Scarbury. Since my reply was sort of off that topic, I thought I'd start a new thread, to discuss making songvids of GAH, esp. now that the DVDs are out. I just came from the 2005 Stargate Fan Awards, where I voted for many excellent songvids, and that put me in mind--again--to enquire of other GAH fans to see if anyone knows of songvids for this fandom. I've been searching the web, with no luck so far. Any takers on trying one's hand at making one?) Music videos is a popular medium for many shows. I personally love Stargate SG-1 songvids, as some call them. Are there anything like this for GAH? Sadly, I don't have the hardware nor the software to make any (yet). Being so new to this board, I don't know what y'all do and don't know about vidding. Here's a cool jumping off point, a permanent livejournal article "Vidding for Newbies": www.livejournal.com/users/permetaform/166861.htmlIf you want an idea of what songvids can be like, visit my little blog. I don't make my own, but I've got reviews and links to the editors' sites so you can download and view them yourself. There's a great clearinghouse for vids of many fandoms (I haven't checked if there's any GAH but I will shortly) at www.dreamvision-entertainment.com/videoelite/resources.htmlMy blog for SG-1 vids reviews and links is sg1songvids.blogspot.com/ . A great clearinghouse of JUST Stargate vids is Kawoosh at kawoosh.co.uk/ . It'd be so cool, now that all three seasons are out on DVD, to get folks to try their hands at GAH videos.

I really like the concept of this idea. For example, you could take your favorite episodes and edit the highlights together with a decent early 80s song and create a songvid. Of course, it would be fitting to have a song from that era that would somehow connect with the theme of the episode you're vidding. I would like to compile scenes from my favorite episodes and integrate the opening credits for the cast with the radio version of 'Believe It Or Not' as a songvid. It sounds like your pretty much playing the role of an editor. What do you think, Billswoman? Am I simplifying this idea a bit much?

You've got the gist of it, yeah! Some vids can focus on a particular character, some on relationships (eg, Pam's and Ralph's relationship as it evolved thru the series, culminating in them getting married), some are flat-out funny. Maybe get a vid of just Ralph's crashes to a funny tune or song (eg, someone took the Benny Hill theme and put a bunch of slapstick-looking shots from Stargate to it. It's really funny!) It's a type of medium, and yeah, you as the songvid maker ARE the editor. I get ideas in my head too, but sadly I don't have any way to make the vids, until some day in the far future when I have a modern-day computer, not something from early 2001. In other words, a dinosaur, lol!

Yeah, I bought my computer back in May and it's already obsolete. I'm sure in a few years this software will be a staple of just about every home computer system instead of the models that now sell close to $3,000 or over.

OK, this is it in a nutshell, per vidding for newbies: www.livejournal.com/users/permetaform/166861.html1. You need .avi files. You can get s/w that converts your DVDs to .avi, one of which is Smart Ripper, which you can get for free at www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/smartripper.cfm (I've already got them in that format, so no worries for me apparently.) 2. You need an editor. Windows Movie Maker (WinXP needed), iMovie (macintosh), some others; I'm researching these now. 3. You need a song. Okay, it says, 1) Get a random .avi file from somewhere. (Doesn't matter, outtakes or something you've downloaded.) Get a song. 2) Open up your editor. 3) Play with the clip. ******************************** Okay, I've got the .avi's, I've got the songs, now I need the video editor. I heard a particular song this afternoon, one you ALL know, and when it started, I busted a gut laughing, and said YES!! THIS is my first songvid, and it's for BILL! And not Maxwell/O'Neil either, this one's all Billy-boy. I ain't sayin' which one, either. I wanna be the first to make a GAH vid I've got 12 eps to choose from (counting the pilot as one ep) from all three seasons. This is going to be fun, but hard work I imagine.

I've got a fitting song in mind for a Bill Maxwell GAH vid. How about "Don't Mess With Bill" by the Marvelettes?

Hmmm, don't know that one.
I've changed my mind about the one I mention above; after all's said and done, it's actually a love song... of a sort... if you really listen to the lyrics and not just the awesome music and song itself. Okay, it was "Bad to the Bone" by Thorogood and the Destroyers, lol.. Yeah, Bill's bad to the bone, but like I said, this is really the singer "speaking" to a girl he wants, not just bragging about being bad to the bone.
So I've got, all-told, three songs I wanna work on:
Don't Cry (Maxwell/O'Neil)
and um... two others I ain't mentionin'.
I've got the video editor now, but I've been putting off installing and running it till I'm ready to tackle the first phase of this little mission.

I've decided not to take on more than I can chew, and do something simpler for my first "video."
I've already done a scene capture (Bill putting on his shirt in the hosp in Beast in the Black). Next, I'm going to take the song in "Divorce..." and splice the scenes WITH the song together, to make it one continuous song. I was going to start it with Ralph saying, "I'm filing for a divorce, honey" then the song bit when he's walking off... then Bill's quick scene saying "We can kiss and make up later"... then the song till the end.
I WANTED to add Ralph throwing himself in front of Bill, then the drive to the hospital when Ralph's clutching him, then when Ralph says that about partners, and then Bill walks him to the spaceship (even tho we all know how terrified Bill is of the green guys, but he didn't even hesitate.)
Sadly, that would not be part of the song portion... so that'll have to wait, I'm sticking with JUST the song, since the audio's there already, and I haven't learned how to add outside audio yet.
Next, I'm going to do the same with O:SS and Eve of Destruction. Yep, the original, har har har har!! It'll be awesome!
My next task, eventually, will be where I can archive these two so folks can download and listen to them and keep them forever and ever and call them George.

Here's a suggestion for a place to keep them: www.ripway.comI use this site for housing my avatars. And... if you call them George, you have to hug & squeeze them, too.

After re-reading my post and yours, I so wanted to go and do it NOW, but naw, I just started a new job, and I am BEAT tonight!! So, this saturday, AFTER I finish my current fanfic WIP, I'm going to tackle at least one of those videos. Can't decide which yet: "Divorce..." or O:SS?
I read from someone who vids AND writes fanfic that she switches, so she doesn't get overwhelmed with projects. I think that's a good idea; I hate to leave stories unfinished. One reason I pulled two entirely off their archive sites, cuz I don't see when I can work on them, I'm still in mourning and the scenes they needed, well... just not in the frame of mind... or just not in a Trek frame of mind at least, which is what they were.
Sorry, I'm going on; actually in a decent mood, although tired down to my toenails, and that's mighty tired.

OK, the female Bill fans...or at least those of us who think he's sexy as all get-out... and that's mighty sexy.... I'm putting together a vid, and it's top secret right now, heh... and I need episode ideas for scenes that show Bill at his sexiest and toughest (both preferably). I've got 20 eps, but sadly not the ones MrsM keeps giving me screencaps from (like This is the one the suit was meant for, and those awesomely sexy puffy shirt bits). If you had to list three eps of Bill at his best, which would you choose? I've got a LOT already to choose from, but I at least need "This is the one..." and I think "Heaven is in your genes" (and his too, wink wink...) before I'm ready. I just learned on my editor I'm going to use (VirtualDub, that you can get for free via www.zdnet.com, if you wanna try your own hand at vidding) that it's easier to dub a .wav file onto a vid without audio than it is to edit the existing vid, audio intact (I can't seem to locate the audio codec it insists it wants). Any way, apparently music vids use .wav files, and I was lucky to find this song in a .wav format (and I ain't saying the song, that's the big secret). I decided to play O:SS while this song was playing (the images and the song were funny too!) and if I had saved, it would've dubbed the song over the vid right then and there! So now, all I have to do is piece together the various Bill scenes, play the completed vid while the .wav is going, save the dub and voila! I'm done! At least, in a perfect world... I'm learning this as I go. So, Bill fans, get those three episode suggestions in. Once it's completed, and I'm happy with it (i have to maintain my rep for excellence as in my fanfic reviews, after all), I'll try to find an archive site where you can save it to your drive and cherish it forever. And name it George. har har har har! I crack me up!

I saw under the captioning thread a quote from the song "I touch myself" by the Divinyls, and I was wondering if I'd remembered to put this in here about the slideshow I made to that song.
I've got it so the images line up with some portions of the song (eg, "I want you above me" has the ceiling mirror with Bill on the waterbed, lol!) Gawd, I love that line...
But any way, I'm trying to figure out a way to actually save the slideshow with music & images and get it archived somewhere to share. I'm too spastic, I'm realizing, to make music vids (at least with what I have to work with on my old computer). A buddy of mine on another board did a slideshow too, and archived it, so I'm hoping to do the same.
It's all about Bill, of course... well, okay, I think there's one or two pics of Ralph WITH Bill in it!
More later, got money to go spend in Seattle today, wh00t!!
