I finally got around to watching the full William Katt interview from the bonus features on the DVD.
Katt actually says something along the lines of: "People ask me if I still have one of the suits from the show. Yeah, maybe to burn it. Why would I want one of those??? I hated the suit."
OH MY GOD, what a complete CHOAD. Um, yeah, I'd say he didn't like the part too much. Oh, the humanity...

I don't know about that, Maxwell-FBI. Just because someone hates wearing an outfit doesn't mean they don't like the part. I can give you plenty of examples of such costumes.
For example, I did a pre-show for the musical drama "TEXAS" back in '99. I loved the opportunity to be on stage, but hated the fact I had to juggle wearing a dress. Not just any dress, but one that was rather old (as in 20 years, long time for clothes), very long (ankle length) and had ruffles around the shoulders. I really dislike wearing dresses while juggling (I prefer pants), but I didn't let that show during the opening skit (but it helped it was also fun), and no one even asked how I felt wearing it. I also had a hat in another play that I hated wearing because it was a flowerpot basket with a huge green rose on it. The hat itched incessantly, and I think it's still in the wardrobe at the school. And there are still other outfits that were a bit embarrassing, but I wore them anyway and acted my heart out. Won a couple of speech trophies wearing odd outfits.
To me, anyway, I never read into his interview he disliked the role of Ralph, just the jammies. I think if he hated the role itself, he never would have accepted it nor would go to these conventions and sign autographs. I've read about actors who have done so. Costumes are a part of the job, whether they look cool or silly, and the wearer has a right to his or her own opinion. It's how you perform wearing it that counts, you show you really hate an outfit, your performance will also suffer.

He also states in the interview that he doesn't think Ralph "grew" very much over the course of the series, implying he didn't think it was much of a challenge character-wise.
He's said many times that he hated that suit (just ask Pam Parrish); I don't think it's much of a surprise to the people on this board that he wanted to burn the suit in effigy...

Listening to the interview, it wasn't a surprise to me he wanted to burn the suit either. As I said above, people have their opinions to costumes, and will always feel that way. In the case of that dress I wore, I was fed up with it by the end of the season (kept tripping on it, etc.), that I wanted to never see it again. (I regretted that belief the next year, because the new outfits were denim and very uncomfortable to wear in warm weather.) Plus, considering how they treated GAH, particularly in the third season, we don't know if Ralph would have grown up more, so I can see why Katt felt the character didn't grow up. The show wasn't around long enough to give him that chance. Kind of like the Sixth Doctor in "Doctor Who," played by Colin Baker. He was given two seasons, not including the hiatus they put the show on for a season. After that time, for some reason TPTB decided to fire him, blaming him for the bad ratings. You listen to him today on the audios they do, and he's listens as a vastly improved character and makes you wish he had the chance to develop his character (well that and to not wear that really dumb clown looking outfit). I think if given a proper third season and a fourth, Ralph, Pam and Bill would have improved even more. Just my two cents.

I know people can hate outfits, but I guess I am just more nostalgic than some people...A LOT of people know him from that and followed his other career moves based on that silly suit.

I agree, just cuz he hated wearing the suit, and Culp mentions that too in HIS commentary, I don't think that means Katt hated playing Ralph (or why would he take the part?)
I think maybe there was an overreaction to his comment, like I did when Culp refered to GAH as an "insignificant TV series" of the early 80's.

I think his hate for the jammies helped. RALPH HATED THEM TO!

Well, to me, the 'Suit' was PART of the actual CHARACTER, ya know? Dunno. I just see such joy in the faces of Culp and Sellecca when discussing GAH in general that I do not see at all when hearing from Katt. But maybe that's just me...

He also said he had a lot of fun playing the part and that he remembers laughing all the way home. When he took the role he neber figured the suit into the equasion. He wouldn't've taken the part if he didn't like it. He said he liked it and it made him laugh which was hard to do. He also said he thought of himself as a seroius actor so to find out wht the suit looked looked like...You should watch Stephen Cannells interview about how he came up with the show and it should cast more light. As far as Dr Who... John Nathan Turner was a lot to blame fro the tenure of the 6th Doctor and the hiatus. It's back and better that ever. It is amazing. The stories are fantastic.

I'm sorry for the delay in saying this, but welcome to the boards, msboku. I'm like you in regard to what Katt said in the interview, hence my comments about the costume. To me at least, he knows that the character was important in his career, and despite the suit, had fun. And, unlike Mark Hamill, who beat Katt for the role of Skywalker, I remember Katt for more than just "Greatest American Hero," so he wasn't stereotyped (though he and others allude to being afraid of happening in the interviews). (Bit OT) I'm guessing you live outside the US, because we don't have the new series of "Doctor Who" yet. I really wish some station would take it, even if it was PBS (I'd contribute to the station if they did), so we could see it. They won't even release the new series DVDs here until then. I do agree with JNT being a main reason for the shows problems then. Colin Baker received a bad rap and one of the worst costumes I've ever seen on TV. (He's my third favorite doctor, behind Pertwee and Davison). Listening to the Sixth Doctor audios makes me wish he had a fair shot. Series might not have had so long a hiatus after 1989.

There are a couple of classic ones I'd like to have, but have to wait until they come out here. At least "Claws of Axos" (Third Doctor) will be out next month. Been looking forward to that one, I've never seen it.

That is cool! I just saw the first 5 minutes of the next Dr after Chris E. If you haven't seen any of the new series the eps get better as they go. All the unanswered questions are answered. It is great! I Love the ep Dalek. Great Character development for the Doc but that's all I'll say. Let me know how you like it.
