Well, most people are like your wife. They like to watch a show casually, and not be too passionate about any show. They don't like to "geek out". They're missing out.

I've never yet been to any convention, though, which I regret. I would love to go to one eventually.

Oh, same here, believe me. Those conventions aren't cheap. I know people that go to a lot of them, and will pay, like $100, just to get their picture taken with William Shatner (or whoever). And that's just for a photo with a star. Then there's the price of admission, of course.

It seems like they are gouging their fans.

Either way, that still seems like a lot when everything else is being taken care of for them. Why gouge fans? And worse, why do fans allow it!?

It is out of hand I think. $30 or more for a signed photo, another $10 or $20 to take a photo with them. Price at the door for one day could be anywhere from $30 to $50 to get in.

I know that they want to make money (some cases need to) and they want only "serious" fans bothering them, but the expense seems heavy, especially when getting charged at the door. If you have a lot of celebrities that one person wants to see, it could easily cost them over $1,000 in the facility, not to mention hotel, food, travel, etc.

I've been lucky - the only time I've gotten to meet William Katt (as well as Clint Howard and Ashley Bell - an upcoming actress) was when they showed "Sparks" in Katy.
Only cost was your ticket to get into the theater (a little higher than normal, but $14 wasn't too bad for a sit down dinner theater). You didn't necessarily have to buy a graphic novel, but many did as this was after the movie, and even then you still were able to get photos with them at no additional charge.
I just wish I wasn't exhausted at the time - it was great meeting Katt and Howard (I think Clint is the better actor of the two Howard brothers myself), but that tiredness made my shyness come back a bit too hard. (It was a reason I didn't understand until he pulled me into the hug that Katt doesn't mind being hugged. I was having a little too much trouble reading cues).
Oh I still get a chuckle remembering that both Katt and Howard looked at me and thought "You're tall" - I'm 5'8".
Will say this much - a lot of present day actors and some of the older ones can take a lesson in their humbleness and kindness toward their fans. I don't go to conventions for the fact most actors nickel and dime you for everything. I get charging for photos if a professional does it, but your own camera? - no.

When I wasn't dozing off...

I just wanted everyone to know that I might be out a while. We got hit by a major storm on Monday and they are saying the clean-up, etc. could take weeks. I'm managing to pilfer a weak signal to get this out. Just didn't want anyone to worry.

The derecho has left a ton of damage in its path, but we are all okay. Just cleaning up and trying to figure out how to get back off autopilot.
