He had better get Pam right though. If I recall correctly (and Vid, please correct me if I'm wrong), Katt had to approve the Ralph head design before it could be cast. They did this with the Tiki version of Ralph, and that was a caricature of Ralph. I'd hope they'd share the same courtesy to Connie and Culp. Now, I do wonder, however, if they're now doing the "Planet of the Apes" ones because Heston passed away. Then again, they could also be making ones for the TV series as well (which IMHO, was pretty decent).

Nah, the Apes line was announced long before Heston's death. I think probably that it was the fact that Apes was Mego's biggest-selling line outside of the Super Heroes that prompted the re-release. And the original line did include the two human characters from the Apes TV series. Whether or not they plan to do a figure based on Heston's "Taylor" hasn't been mentioned, so I would guess probably not. (Although Dr. Mego does have a custom sculpt of "Taylor" and a couple others that could pass as "Brent" available on his website, so a collector could customize his/her own to finish the line.) And as for this eBay auction of the Ralph prototype being removable from the package affecting value, that probably won't be an issue since this is the first one I've heard of to even *have* a box. There have been reports of only four Ralph prototypes in existence discovered after Mego closed down, and -- get this -- two of them were found in a dollar bin at a rummage sale! A guy who owns at least one of those says he has been offered as much as 20 Grand for it...and turned it down!

They also had the VW beetle with Ralph and Bill as well being sold in KayBee stores, so I'm not sure if the reports are true. On the "Planet of the Apes" though, it wouldn't surprise me if they used Brent, given that he does have a similar appearance to Heston. I think that was why the actor was cast for "Beneath the Planet of the Apes." (just a weird movie IMHO).

I wish I had the money to be a major GAH collector. Unfortunately, the small amount I do have I have devoted to the A-TEAM. ;D

Final Bid on the Ralph Prototype Figure auction: $7,752.00 !!!!!!!!!! I wish I had that much spending money. It's a lot for just a toy, even if it is our favorite flying superhero.

To a child, they are toys. To an adult, they are "cherished collectibles." At least that's what I tell myself. And to my girlfriend, who intentionally refers to them as "dolls" just to annoy me.

Very true... but it's easy to say toys to discourage bidding that much on a figure. At least it also helps when you go to an antique store, see a rare collectible lunch box ("Emergency!") and say "I'm not paying $75 for a metal box." Then again, said box wasn't worth that much because it was incomplete (no Thermos) and had writing all over it. That is one plus here - though not accurately mint as it was taken out of the box, that doll is in mint condition alone.

Mentioning the antique store reminded me of a day a few years ago while browsing antique stores, in which I came across a toy U.S.S. Enterprise made by South Bend in 1979 for Star Trek: The Motion Picture, still in the box. Very cool toy for the time: had electronic lights and sounds, and the hull pieces and engines were removable and could be rearranged to make different starships. The darn thing was $50. Just fifty bucks! As as luck would have it, I was between jobs at the time and didn't have that much cash on hand. Ticked me off. Now, I couldn't find one on eBay for less than $200. I'm still kicking myself over that one.

I've had the same feeling, but in a different way. This case, it was a KayBee Toystore in a mall a few years back. It's the same one I mention where I got my juggling clubs for $7. I'm almost positive that I saw a "GAH" beetle set (the beetle, Bill and Ralph) there, but didn't remember the show at the moment and therefore didn't buy it. Now, that won't happen because a. all the KayBees are modernized and commercialized and b. that one doesn't exist anymore because said mall was demolished. Great mall, but in a bad location and fell victim to the cloverleafs. (And, be patient with me on calling action figures dolls. I was a clown in a parade yesterday and kept insisting my hat was a Pokemon. Simply put, the jester hat just makes me think that if it had a face, it'd be the newest character in some new level of the card game. )

(In Colin Baker Sixth Doctor Voice): Replica... REPLICA?! That's NOT a replica of the Greatest American Hero - unless William Katt/Ralph looks like a chiseled-faced mannequinn in the suit. Not a bad suit though...

This is the suit... and it's gone up to $50 since I got mine two years ago. They even still have the link to my unofficial review that comes back to this site. Yeah, its great for a Halloween costume that was 25 years overdue. (I don't think it justifies a $500 dollar price tag for this auction though!) www.80stees.com/products/Greatest-American-Hero-Costume.aspLots of other classic 80s trivia on this site...they've added a lot of nostalgia since I was there last.

Sure doesn't seem happy to wear the suit. I'd like to make a suit, but am going to focus on my other projects right now for the fair. There are too many I really want to do this year. Will give the "replica" guy kudos - he's at least not trying to sell weird things such as the "World's Longest Andy Capp's Hot Fry" or toast with weird markings on them.

Yep, because of his sale pitch that you can "Buy it Now." Plus, based on the face, I'd say that's a unisex mannequinn head. Body's the right shape though. Just looks odd to me. :-\

Yep - but I've seen that face with male versions, so I figured it's a unisex one that is bald and you put a wig on it. Had thought the torso was too, but based on the shape, it's masculine, more of a teen-aged one. Has the triangle shape over hourglass.
