I just bought a Blu-Ray Player a few days ago, and I'm very satisfied with it so far. The picture quality on regular DVDs is actually improved if played through it, and I've started buying Blu-Ray discs as well, including "3.10 To Yuma". The picture quality and sound on that disc just blew me away! And I don't even have a home theater to maximize the sound and picture quality. My tv is high definition, but not FULL HD (1080p). It's only 720p. I can only imagine how crystal clear the image and sound must be on a home theater with a 60" full HD screen.
Do any of you have a Blu-Ray player, and if so, how do you like it?

I don't. I prefer the DVDs I already have.

I don't. I prefer the DVDs I already have. You still can enjoy your DVDs on a Blu-ray player, that's the beauty of it, and they'll look even better than played through a regular DVD player.

I was told they would not unless they were Blu-Ray discs.

HoudiniDerek: I was told that too, but that's false----if you buy a Sony Blu-Ray player anyway. (I'm not 100% sure that Blu-ray players from other brands are compatible) I can definitely confirm that Sony players are compatible with regular DVDs, since I'm playing my DVDs through it and they play perfectly fine----better than ever, in fact.

Don't have one - mostly because my DVD player works all right and blue-ray's a bit high right now for me. I would love to have my hands on one of the old laser disc players though, because I saw a couple of hard to find "Doctor Who" laser discs for cheap at an antique store.
(OK, I'm old, but not ancient)

I bought mine because it was on sale at Sears here in Canada for $300. Its normal price was $500. But when you buy a Blu-Ray Player, you need to buy an HDMI cable for the optimum picture quality and sound, which is sold separately and is quite pricey (around $80). The Player only comes with RCA cables, which offer only "fair" picture quality. So with our high Canadian taxes, by the time I went home with the player and the HDMI cable, I had paid over $400.

I think certain Blu-Ray players have the "downward compatibility" or something like that.
I'm not really interested because the number movies I'd want on Blu-Ray I could probably count on one hand & I likely already own the regular ones. I see no sense in duplicating.

Good point, Lauren. I will wait until they are mandatory to have to buy new DVDs and such. I will only get one if forced too...or if it is a gift.

I'll resurrect this topic in a year or so, and see if you guys have changed your tune by then. The selection of Blu-ray discs is still small compared to DVD of course, but is growing fast----and all the new films are now being released simultaneously on Blu-ray and DVD. The fact of the matter is: Within the next 2 or 3 years, all of you will have a Blu-ray Player and loving it. The crystal-clear picture quality----which is 6 times superior to DVD picture quality----is quite addictive, once you're used to it.

If you will buy me a Blu-Ray player and pay for new DVDs of all of my current collection; yes, I will switch and be gung-ho.

OK, Houdini, I will do that. Just let me know what brand of Player you want and make me a list of the DVDs to replace. ;D (And by the way, I'm not going to replace the DVDs I already have with Blu-ray discs. I have an extensive DVD collection (close to 300 discs), and like I said they look actually better anyway when I play them through my Blu-ray Player. However the new movies I buy from now on, I will buy on Blu-ray if they are available in that format. )

I like the DVDs because the clarity is great. You can see some details that make you wonder how they got through censors at times, and other times you notice things you've never seen before. BTW, the "censoring" things would be that Ralph's boxers have a fly in "My Heroes...," which was normally not allowed back then. Blu-Ray of course is high for me too right now, so I'll stick to DVDs. I only got my player to begin with at first because "Doctor Who" was only available regularly via DVD. (harder to find the vids by then)

Yes, I have lots of DVDs of tv shows also. Well, I have all ten seasons of STARGATE SG-1 with both made-for-TV movies and the original STARGATE movie. I have four seasons of STARGATE ATLANTIS; the entire series of THE ADDAMS FAMILY; the entire series of THE GREATEST AMERICAN HERO; the entire series of KEEN EDDIE; the entire series of PROFIT; all seven seasons of MACGYVER; and I am working on getting the two made-for-TV movies which I would require if I switch. Plus, all four seasons of THE PRETENDER and the two made-for-TV movies; two seasons of HEROES; the entire series of JERICHO; the entire series of THE LITTLES and the two TV movies; all six seasons of HOGAN'S HEROES; and the first season of EARLY EDITION. I have more, but those are the ones in front of me at the moment. ;D Want me to continue? That is just my TV on DVD so far.

*takes a huge breath*
The Greatest American Hero - All three seasons and the collectors edition tin
The Incredible Hulk - Seasons 1 - 3
Buffy The Vampire Slayer - the whole series 1 - 7
Angel - whole series 1 - 5
Red Dwarf (BBC show) - whole series 1 - 8
Last of the Summer Wine (BBC show) - Collection Set (different eps from the first two seasons), 1976 series, 1977 series and 1996 series
Aqua Teen Hunger Force - Volume 1 - 4
Sealab 2021 - Season 1 - 3
Mystery Science Theater 3000 - Volume 1 - 12 (4 episodes per volume) plus 10 single episode ones and one extra one that had an episode replacement for the Godzilla movie they didn't have rights to anymore... and there's a 20th anniversary set coming out in October! ;D The show has been on for 10 years.... phew!
I'd like to count the Doctor Who dvds I have, but I'm not sure if this Dalek collection and Cybermen Collection is legit... plus the two Pertwee DVDs I got... I DO know that the new series ones that I got aren't legit so that leaves them out.
That's my list for you.

I have "Starhunter." Does that count? Well, besides that, I have "GAH," "Emergency!" (seasons 1-3), "Fawlty Towers," "Red Dwarf" Seasons 2&3, "The Wild Wild West" season 1, several "Doctor Who" DVDs (at least one from the first eight of nine Doctors - we'll never get a DVD of the "Doctor Who" TV movie thanks to Fox ), and various best of episodes collections from shows such as "The Beverly Hillbillies," "Andy Griffith show" and "The Red Skelton Show."

Um...
I have the pilot episode of Stargate SG-1...
Er...
Oh, and my wife has the entire MacGyver series, and now Firefly, too.
Uh...
My kids have lots of Bob the Builder and Thomas the Train. Does that count?
